Hello Ted,

I am glad to hear that you liked

 86523 Aug 7 1994 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/ts/tstsr20.zip
 tstsr20.zip TSR programs (noboot,reslock,sordino,timedown,timeup ...)

Strictly speaking my programs are not quite freeware, since that
would indicate that the user could employ them for any purpose. This
is not exactly the case. My programs can be freely used for the
users' own, personal, non-commercial purposes, but not for example
in a business firm or at a university classroom without my explicit
consent.

Appreciated.

There are good motivations for doing this. I feel that helping users
to utilize the net in a correct way will work to everyone's
advantage in the end.

We've never had to go as far as to test these claims in court, God
forbid. But my formulation of our rights is based on a serious
discussion about both the index and the directory arrangement
copyright issues with a lawyer professor friend of mine here at the
University of Vaasa.

I am just a layman in these matters, but to me that sounds a bit
like rewriting a text-book's detailed contents lists with a suitable
program and then claiming that the original copyright no longer
holds. To me it also has some resemblance to the question of reverse
engineering.

Copyright, especially international copyright, and intellectual
property are complicated issues. Beyond stating one's copyrights
after legal council, as I've done for Garbo, these matters are best
left to the professionals of law.

Yes, of course. I fully share your sentiment about mirroring being a
good thing. That is not the issue nor in doubt in here.

> What's behind your concern with copyright?

I am not sure I quite understand why this part would need any
explicit explaining. The same concerns as anyone has for one's
copyrights.

: Hi Timo! :)

Hello Jeremy,

: I'm just writing to say thank you for being a lone voice of sanity
: and good advice amidst the din of the new users newsgroup.

Thank you for your very nice message.

: As a complete newbie myself, I found the new users newsgroup a bit
: like a major traffic jam in which nobody knows how to drive. Amidst

Now that's a very apt parable, when comes to think of it. Yes.

: the chaos I found your posting about why newbie's shouldn't ask for
: penpals on that newsgroup. It was a breath of fresh air, and
: contained a couple of helpful pointers on where to find stuff on the
: net. Thank you!

I am glad to hear this. I try to make the guidance constructive,
since so many new users are more or less lost, and there are also
some unnecessarily harsh postings because of that. Fortunately, the
more friendly approach has been gaining ground.

: Like many other newbie's, I have had trouble getting started, and
: have been trying to find sites with information on all the
: ins-and-outs of the internet - the new users newsgroup definitely
: ain't it!
:
: I suppose that's an awfully general request, but I've often thought
: all newbies should be instantly pointed towards one large set of
: read-only 'Newbie FAQ files', to stop them making the same mistakes
: over and over again. Do you know of any good places to look?

Yes, but the answer is neither simple nor straight-forward. You see
there is so much material. One piece, naturally, is the regular
"Welcome to news.newusers.questions" posting. Not surprisingly, I
would also mention my own

 97621 May 21 10:08 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/ts/tsfaqn43.zip
tsfaqn43.zip Questions from UseNet and Timo's answers

Much of the material you see me post in news.newsusers.questions
for the benefit of new users comes from that. Also there is much
lore

 86889 Mar 21 12:00 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/doc-net/usenews.zip
usenews.zip Usenet Netiquette, creating new newsgroups, etc advice

But the problem is that by the time a new user learns how to get all
this material s/he no longer is a fledgling. :-)

: I'm sure you're very busy, and may not have time to reply to this,
: but if you do, then I'll know that my very first piece of
: international e-mail made it to the other side of the world!

You are right, and I often have to resort to prerecorded replies to
emailed contacts. However, your points were so good and your message
so friendly that I wanted to write a personalized response.

Your response to my e-mail really made my day, thanks Timo. I'm
looking forward to checking out the sites you mentioned for new-user
information. (I would have had no idea to look in these places -
cyberspace is so VAST!) I am gradually learning the skills I need,
and have avoided some of the newbie pitfalls, although I'm sure
there are many more awaiting me.

It was also encouraging for me to get a response from my first reply
to a newsgroup posting - I hope I meet more friendly and helpful
people on the net.

Keep up the good work, catch you round,

You will, Jeremy. Unfortunately you'll also meet many hostile and

: Hi,

Hello Garbo User,

: 1991. Our local image collection got trashed a long time ago, and
: I'm currently trying to rebuild it from scratch. However, I still
: miss the pictures I acquired from garbo.uwasa.fi; as they seem to

: available somewhere (e.g. from an old garbo mirror or something like
: that)? Many thanks in advance for your help,

We currently have a fair collection of astronomy related GIFs in the
following directories. These directories have replaced our old gif
picture directories, I think, about a year ago.

/pc/gifapoll : Astronomy gifs of the Apollo missions to the Moon
/pc/gifaster : Astronomy gifs of asteroids and comets
/pc/gifcraft : Astronomy gifs of shuttle, satellites and probes
/pc/gifearth : Astronomy gifs of the Earth and the Moon
/pc/gifinner : Astronomy gifs of the inner solar system
/pc/gifouter : Astronomy gifs of the outer solar system
/pc/gifslevy : Astronomy gifs of P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet
/pc/gifstar : Astronomy gifs of stars and galaxies
/pc/gifunid : Miscellaneous astronomy gifs of unidentified targets

Furthermore we have some 'Garbo' gifs in garbo-gifs/ directory.

Hello Garbo User,

That is a good question, so I'll take the opportunity and answer
also publicly. The current answer is no. As you know, Garbo
specializes while for example SimTel is broad scope repository and
x2ftp.oulu.fi concentrates on programming. Delphi would sound
something fitting Garbo, but the problem is that we have tried to
direct our specializations also along the personal interests of the
people working with Garbo. We are very pressed for time so we
naturally look for such additional angles to motivate our work. For
the time being no one of us here is in any way involved with Delphi
programming. Hence no Delphi programs at Garbo. Thus I would suggest
SimTel and x2ftp.oulu.fi for Delphi material.

Dear User,

Thank you kindly for your very welcome enquiry about registering my
material. The documentation in my packages indeed usually says:

"This package may be used and distributed freely for NON-COMMERCIAL,
NON-INSTITUTIONAL, PRIVATE purposes, provided it is not changed in
any way. (Repacking with another method is ok, though.) For ANY
other usage, such as use in a business enterprise or a university,
contact the author for registration. Uploading to bulletin boards is
encouraged. Please do not distribute any part of this package
separately."

I am afraid I have to breach this promise because I do not currently
have the time to the registration arrangements in a manner that
would make a shareware distribution of my programs worth my while.
Therefore I regret to inform you that for the time being my material
is not registrable for commercial or institutional usage. This also
goes for public university classroom usage. The only allowed usage
of my programs for my users thus is your own, private, personal,
non-profit usage which does not require registration.

Thus I currently have no other choice than honestly to recommend
that you try to find corresponding material from some other author
if you need my material for commercial or institutional purposes.

My apologies for the inconvenience caused by the facts of my busy
life.

   All the best, Timo

I must openly confess that I do not know for sure. You see, I have
never actually tested CMOS.EXE with a low battery, so the program is
based on information in PC technical manuals.

You are most welcome. I take it this is about the MAKEDIR.EXE in

 tsutlf14.zip Timo's 6th utility set (advdate,choose,deledir,strings,strmemo,)

In fact you can't or at least shouldn't. Let me explain. For some
reason or another sometimes a directory name with blanks (or
something similar) gets created. The actual problem is getting rid
of such directories. The DELEDIR.EXE is for that purpose. But I had
to be able to create such directories in order to test DELEDIR.EXE.
That is why I wrote MAKEDIR.EXE. Of course I could write a
GOTODIR.EXE program. I'll consider it. But playing around with
invalid directory names is not guaranteed to be safe for the user.

Sounds rather cumbersome, but with no guarantees because of the
sheer size of the file, you still could try

Of the WWW browsers I have used Netscape seems to be the best choice
for the task. But here is the outline how it goes with lynx for
example to download my tsbat47.zip.

lynx http://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/

[IMAGE] Garbo PC-archives

   :
/pc/ts/ Programs by Prof. Timo Salmi
   (Enter at /pc/ts/)
   :

tsbat47.zip A collection of useful batch files and tricks, T.Salmi
   (Enter at tsbat47.zip)

This file cannot be displayed on this terminal: D)ownload, or C)ancel
(Enter D)

   Save to disk
   (Enter)

Enter a filename: tsbat47.zip
(Enter)

The file tsbat47.zip is downloaded.

Lynx mostly works but it is not an unproblematic choice. For example
if you Enter at an .lzh file you'll probably just get garbage on the
screen, since lynx only seems to recognise few binary files like
.zip files. Others it mistakes as text files and dumps them on the
screen.

This works only with the English DOS version. You have to change
the word `enter` for any other language. I think it is better to
include a small external program in the batch file:

        @echo off
        if exist myinput.com goto input
        echo BATCH_INPUT___hhQX-PPP^XPPP D"HH0D40DF0De0Dgs>myinput.com

I note that, if an empty reply line is given to the TSBAT47 #40 code, as a
side-effect the time on my PC is set to 1am. Ouch!

However, using "English" DOS6.2, changing "time" to "date" seems good, if one
also changes %%4 to %%5 - "1:" is a good time but a bad date.

==========================
Q. I am trying to find a simple way of "grabbing" the
file itself through my web browser (Lynx).

A. Lynx needs to know when a file is not text. Lynx looks for the
following file in the current directory, your root directory, and its
default directory in that order. The file name is .mime.types.

=============== cut here ==============
# example mime.types file.
# see the NCSA X Mosaic documentation at
# http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/Mosaic/Docs/extension-map.html
# for more details

Zoo zoo
Executable com
executable dsk

I have had no problems downloading from Garbo mirrors since
I made this change to my root directory.

Dear Professor,
I am enclosing a batch file I wrote a year ago. It generates
Random numbers with only the standard DOS commands. I know that one
of your specialties is batch files so perhaps you can use it or
include it in one of your collections.

Thank you,
John Rusnak

I take it that this is from

tspa3470.zip Turbo Pascal 7.0 real mode units for (real:-) programmers.

The COPYFILE procedure needs a buffer on the heap for the copying.
It "BlockReads" the file into the buffer as fast as it can and then
writes the buffer to the target file. This procedure is repeated as
many times as it takes. Hence try {$M 16384,0,80000}

Your can easily solve this problem if you are using ftp. For
example, instead of giving the following command in your ftp session

get INDEX.ZIP

use

get INDEX.ZIP GARBIDX.ZIP

It is simple as that. As an aside, use this trick (like I often do)
also if you apply

 29520 Nov 23 11:38 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/unix/networking/ftp/batchftp102.tar.Z
batchftp102.tar.Z Get/put files automatically by FTP (a definite must!)

 1670 Nov 23 11:38 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/unix/networking/ftp/batchftp.inf
batchftp.inf Timo's instructions for using batchftp

A further comment. Overwriting an existing similarly called file in
unpacking should not be a problem either, since PKUNZIP gives the
possibility of renaming the file.

Quite an assumption :-). I venture to think that I have understood
your problem just fine.

The process of downloading and renaming is easily automated if you
know the rudiments of, for example, Bourne shell scripting on Unix.
(The same goes for doing it with batch programming on MS-DOS). It
takes more work the ONE TIME, but after that it should no longer be
a real problem. That is the way I have solved it when I get indexes
e.g. from the astronomy sites (an interest of mine). Most of them
have very similar if not the same index file names, often 00Index.

I am very upset to hear this! Would you please tell that somebody

Did you already carefully check the TEST4 example in TSUNTENV.TST in

If not, please do so now. Your usage would appear to be incompatible
with the steps shown in my instructions. Setting several values at
one go is quite complicated, since you have to trick the program by
inserting the previous new values for the duration of the unit's
external shell.

Ah, you are right. But it is not that bad. Fortunately, the
information is readily available in Garbo's MS-DOS file index

 111315 Sep 23 10:31 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/INDEX.ZIP

You can make the URLs for these, and any other Garbo MS-DOS files
even yourself. Not easy the first time, but very useful in a longer
run. If you use a Unix system get

 4944 Feb 21 1995 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/unix/ts/gfind
gfind A convenient Unix script for Garbo index searches, T.Salmi

Run the result through
 #!/bin/sh
 sed -e 's#garbo.uwasa.fi:#ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi#'

You need the following data files from Garbo to use this script:
 _file.lst from ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/_file.zip
 _dir.lst from ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/_dir.zip
 INDEX from ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/INDEX.ZIP

and voila! You have a complete URL.

If you wish to do this on MS-DOS, the package to get is

 21838 May 26 08:22 ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/ts/tsgarb12.zip
tsgarb12.zip Garbo related utilities for the PC (ffind, gfind), T.Salmi

I do not believe that's a problem - however, I think many BBS

Garbo does).

It is not that simple. We have a limited manpower. Especially in the
matters of material for programming we have to have someone here who
is familiar with the particular programming language and interested
in the material. In the case of Delphi we do not have such a
maintainer at Garbo. If that changes, we will reconsider. At the
moment we have maintainers with good interests in C, Turbo Pascal
and some assembler.

A further complication is that our main thrust is MS-DOS. Windows is
more of a sideline. In fact we are currently able to take new
Windows uploads only because we happen to have two very able CS
apprectinces, but their term is no longer than till the end of the
year.
