! This file is in mail format, so you can also read it with any !
! suitable Unix mail program such as elm: (elm -f post01.txt). !
! Or try /pc/mail/rmail##.zip to read on a PC !
+---------------------------------------------------------------+

This is the first file that contains my replies and comments that
I and others have made by email, or just written here instead of
posting to (mainly to) comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d.
This file has been renamed to post01.txt. Earlier it was just
0post.
Fri 8-Mar-91: This week's download statistics of garbo.uwasa.fi
is available as /pc/pd2/dload10.lst. It is an ascii file. It
contains the download counts and the descriptions of files that have
had at least 10 downloads from our site during the week. It is the
same statistics that used to be posted in comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d
before I got fed up with the complaints about the free services we
provide to the net.
The weekly Friday to Friday download statistics of the files will
be published as /pc/pd2/dload##.lst. This version contains the
descriptions of the files. The second statisctics, the Monday to
Monday statistics, will be published as /pc/fileinfo/ftplog##.lst
starting the coming monday. This list includes a breakdown by the
downloading sites, and scans all the directories.
Likewise, if you are interested in still seeing _all_ the news I
write about garbo.uwasa.fi files, take a periodic look at the
/pc/pd2/0news-pd2.

One trick, although not a very good one, is to first get the list of
ftp sites (/pc/pd2/ftpsites.arc), and then try out the sites that
have msdos, pc, or games in the description column. We also have a
few at our site. But it is our policy to not to be a game (nor a
gif) site. Thus, all the games we have are either of a particular
quality or have a special interest as demos or an educational
flavor. See the /pc/games and /pc/ts directories for these few
games.

Well, in fact LHARC 2.10 documentation has come out, and is
available by downloading /pc/pd2/lha210e.exe by anonymous ftp eg
from our site.

Have you taken a look at /pc/tsfaq17d.arc Frequently Asked Questions.
Very little directly in there, but a couple of references for Turbo
Pascal, I seem to recall. (There are so many items, that I don't
properly remember even myself what's in there).

Yes, that's right when one comes to think of it. (Good ideas are
simple, but not necessarily vice versa :-). I'll include this
information on submissions to comp.binaries.ibm.pc in my
downloadable postings collection in order to help you with the
propagation of the idea. BTW the suggestion has the added advangate
for users with ftp capability. It keeps frequently updated files
better up to date should the queue be long.

Hello Greg,
Thank you for your email and your warm words. Much appreciated.
I'm sorry. I will not be posting the download statistics any
more to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d. But if you want to get them on a
regular basis there is a very simple and convenient solution. If
you have ftp capability, prepare a suitable automated batchftp
script, and get the new lists say every Tuesday from the
/pc/filelist directory. That way you don't have to try to watch out
for them. If you are not already using batchftp, you'll find in in
the /unix/ts directory as batchftp102.tar.Z. It is a very handy
tool to utilize anyway.

If you are new to MsDos, you would be well advised to get
/pc/pd2/list75f.zip. This listing facility is a de facto standard
of displaying files in MsDos. Available by anonymous ftp from our

I looked at /pc/memutil/vram386.zip at garbo.uwasa.fi archives, and
as I expected there is nothing wrong with it, and I would be very
much surprised if Simtel20's copy were defective. No, the problem
is almost without exception in the user's failure to transfer the
files correctly. The most common error is to forget to set the
transfer binary. You have to make your ftp transfer binary (tenex
in the case of Simtel20) and you have to make the transfer again
binary when you download the file to your PC from your host.

Now that's an excellent comment. Perhaps we should instead
consider making the 1000's of sites across the world to pay us for

Wed 20-Wed-91. The /pc/INDEX file list of garbo.uwasa.fi MsDos
files will from now on be available also in arced form as
/pc/filelist/garboidx.arc. Since an arced file is smaller than the
original, it will take less resources to transfer.
It is made using arc -fi switches for PC eof compatibility, so if
you unarc it on a Unix system, use arc -xi. (Unix arc is available
as /unix/ts/arc.tar.Z if you need it.)

by several users. But contrary to most of the earlier suggestions,
yours is much, much better organized.
Unfortunately there is no way we can take the huge extra effort
this would involve. Even a shareware/PD/freeware classification
would be way too demanding on our time resources in our
non-commercial archive system.
Please don't be discouraged by the fact the the answer had to be
this for practical reasons. Constructive suggestions and feedback
on garbo.uwasa.fi archives are always very welcome.

This one is in response to a following posting of mine:

A general request to garbo.uwasa.fi uploaders while I'm at it:

We very much appreciate your uploads, but would you please go trough
the additional trouble of sending a note on your kind uploads to my
fellow moderator Harri Valkama (hv@garbo.uwasa.fi). (A carbon copy
to me would also be very much appreciated).

In the case of submitting a new, unestablished program to
garbo.uwasa.fi archives, such a note is practically a prerequisite
of acceptance. Please email me for more information if you need it.

And here is my reply:

Hello Bradley,
No problem. My posting expressing our wish that people send us a
note on their uploads was not a flame to you but for general
information. We are very pleased that you did the upload. The
reasons why we would like to have an accompanying note identifying
the uploader include:

  1) To know whom to thank.
  2) To know whom to contact if there are problems and questions.
  3) To ensure that the upload is "bona fide".
  4) To know, if possible, in advance what the program is about.

We have at our site a /pc/sysutil/whoapc.zip whose description seems
to fit the bill. I would guess that it is a TSR utility to eat up
the PCs capacity. I've never tried it, though, since I don't
usually play PC games myself. (Not out of any principle, but since
I very seldom feel like it). One piece of advice for you if you
play, and in particular if you use slow-down programs. Check your
system clock after playing, and reboot if necessary. Your clock may
have been affected. Many games accessing the sound / clock chip
have this snag.

Yes, there is at least /pc/sysutil/silence.com available from our
site. BTW, it is one of few utilities at our site that is not an
archived package but the original .com (which is contrary to our
normal policy). The reason is that when I found this utility I
considered it useful enough to keep it nevertheless. There is also
sordino.exe in my /pc/ts/tstsr10.arc collection, but it is not as
effective.

This is not a flame but a friendly piece of advice on the options
readily available:

This is not a good practice, so let me recount what the user should
do in a situatuation like this before even considering asking the
netters to email, many users perhaps duplicating each other's
efforts for your sole benefit. Although we should try to help each
other, this group should most definitely not be misused as a
substitute for mail servers. If you cannot get connected to
Simtel20, first try
 1) Using automated ftp (batchftp102.tar.Z or autoftp3.zoo).
 2) Using Simtel20 mirror sites. Information on them has often been
    in the news postings.
 3) Using other sites or even BBSes near you.
 4) If, and only if you don't have ftp, then consider the
_automatic_ mail servers. The Simtel20 mail server list has
been often published here in eg Mike Castle's postings.

Hello Tim,

Although I don't have a direct reply to your immediate question,
your question well reflects the problem with the otherwise excellent
archie system. This is the fact that the information tends to be
2-6 weeks out of date, as far as I can tell. This means that archie
is not very useful for searching for new versions. Perhaps the best
way to go is to get the main file lists of Simtel20 and our
garbo.uwasa.fi to check out for these very recent versions of
programs.

As far as I know, this is a standard feature of all newer ftp-servers
(those based on version 5 of bsd ftpd). What all this means, is that
your host address did not translate to a valid name. Most likely your
host is not registered in any available name server, or none of the
name servers answered within the time-out period.

Although we have already built and installed a new ftp daemon it
didn't solve all our problems concerning this. The trouble appears to
be a timing problem in the mips supplied inet-daemon. We are trying
to get this fixed. For all I know, you may succeed, if you just retry
the operation. And I know that although you don't get dir listing you
can retrieve files if you know where they are and what are they
called. So get yourself a copy of pc/INDEX or pc/_file.lst and check
the files out from there.

BTW, not all users seem to suffer from this condition, so maybe it is
some kind of compatibilty problem (mips inetd uses the new van
Jacobsen code).

Well, if you are a new site it is probable that you are not yet
registered at all needed name servers. If I remember correctly it may
need one night to get through every needed places.

Hello Steve,
Thanks for your suggestion, but I am afraid it is not practical.
The major reason is that it is not just one file, but a collection
of ten ascii files. The minor reason is that transferring such
files in an uncompressed format is wasteful of the net resources.
You are right, of cource, in the sense that the know-how on
unpacking arced files is needed, but this is something that has to
be more or less presumed of the user. One has to start from
somewhere, and a basic literacy of using computers has to be
assumed, right? One simply can't start quite from the very basics on
the net. Where should we then start? On explaining how to turn on
the power to the computer? On teaching how to type and enter
commands? On telling that to see a directory one needs a dir (or an
ls) command? No, we have to start from the assumption that if one
uses computers, the user will have be able to find someone near-by
to give the absolute rudiments, if the user doesn't know them.

Yes, this is a problem we have, and it seems to be a problem of the
MIPS configuration and programs. The assured way is to first get
the file list /pc/INDEX, then go to the relevant directory with cd,
and then just use get (not mget) with no wildcards.

I don't say this in any negative sense, but simply as an

A familiar and annoying problem. Yes, there is in fact something
you are not doing. Alt-P is not for permanent changes of the
parameters. Use alt-O Terminal Options for that.

I have used Boyan since version 3D, and like it very much.
I particularly like the way the transfer windows take up only
the right side of the screen, allowing me to see what is
on the other half, the autodetection of filenames for xfer,
the line editor, and the message-upload capability.
It is also the easiest terminal program to add zmodem to,
using dsz -- just tell it which directory dsz.exe or .com
is in. It also has good terminal emulation, and has never
crashed on me. I don't use the script language, so I can't
comment on that, other than that it is very unlike C, or
anything else. I remember it being very flexible from when
I first tried it, though.
