VIDAR SCANNERS HELP U.K.'S LARGEST ELECTRIC UTILITY DESIGN NETWORKS

July 15, 1995 -- Herndon, VA: Eastern Electricity, the U.K.'s largest
regional electric utility company, has selected Vidar Systems Corporation
and Advent Imaging of Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom and Princeton, New
Jersey, to support their New Build network design system. The New Build
system will use Vidar's scanner and Advent's UNIX-based imaging and design
software to automate the design process for new low-voltage electrical
networks.

Using Vidar's TruScan 800 large-document scanner and Advent's Imager
software, automated systems located in each of Eastern's 13 regional
offices will capture schematics and plans supplied by electrical
contractors and builders. The system will enable Eastern to design and
specify overhead or underground cabling-critical components of Eastern's
low-voltage networks-with far greater efficiency and accuracy. Eastern
deems this a necessary step before competition increases due to
deregulation.

"The combination of the TruScan 800 scanner with Advent's Imager software
offers us a data capture solution that is the best of its class," said Jim
Rushmer, design manager at Eastern. 'We are particularly impressed with
the speed and ease with which we can scan our maps without the need for
time-consuming trial-and-error techniques."

The TruScan 800 features Vidar's proprietary adaptive area thresholding to
differentiate between data and background, converting even the poorest
original drawing into a crisp black-and-white image. Designed for
continuous use in commercial operations handling a high volume of
different types of documents, the TruScan 800 reliably captures maps,
engineering drawings, and other kinds of wide-format documents at
resolutions up to 800 dots per inch. Advent's Imager software provides a
user-friendly interface that allows the operator to use all the scanner's
features to obtain the best possible image with little or no training.

Eastern evaluated seven potential suppliers for the New Build system.
Imaging partners Advent and Vidar are part of a consortium led by Bull
Information Systems and also including SHL Vision Solutions, that won the
contract to develop the integrated system.

Advent Imaging, based near Henley-on-Thames, has over a decade of
experience in imaging products on a variety of UNIX workstations.

Vidar is a leading supplier of scanners and film digitizers. In addition to
the TruScan line of monochrome, grayscale, and color large-document
scanners, Vidar manufactures X-ray film digitizers for medical and
scientific applications, as well as an automatic aperture card scanner for
document management applications.

Vidar, headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, has representatives located
throughout the U.S., Europe, and the Far East. In early 1994, the company
opened a European affiliate in Sweden. Vidar products are available
worldwide through a network of distributors, VARs, OEMs, and system
integrators.
