ICL TO MARKET UNISYS OBJECT-ORIENTED UNIVERSAL REPOSITORY WITH ICL DAIS
OBJECT REQUEST BROKER

Integrated, standards-compliant software products provide interoperability
between enterprise servers and desktop clients

San Francisco, CA, August 15, 1995 -- International Computers Limited (ICL)
and Unisys today announced that ICL plans to market the Unisys Universal
Repository integrated with the ICL DAIS Object Request Broker (ORB).

The move will allow enterprises to use the integrated DAIS and Universal
Repository software products as the interface for accessing enterprise
server data and functions using desktop computing tools. As a result,
users will reap the benefits of advanced technology -- specifically
client/server and object-oriented computing -- while leveraging the
substantial investments already made in enterprise server solutions.

"With DAIS and Universal Repository, ICL and Unisys will fulfill one of the
key promises of object-oriented software technology -- encapsulation of
existing systems for reuse in the distributed computing environment of
tomorrow," said Ro Finn, vice president and general manager, Unisys
Management Systems Division, the business unit that develops and markets
the Universal Repository and other Single Point products. "By showing how
object technology can help enterprises avoid the enormous costs of
redeveloping core information solutions, ICL and Unisys will propel this
new software paradigm from the lab into mainstream use."

"Between our two companies, ICL and Unisys have the key components needed
to demonstrate the business relevance of object-oriented software
technology," said Ian Corden, ICL's business manager for DAIS. "Today's
announcement is only the first step in realizing the payback from the
significant R&D investments made in DAIS and Universal Repository."

Enterprise server functions will be accessed by users of desktop software
tools through DAIS, which, in conjunction with the Universal Repository,
encapsulates the function as a self-contained unit -- an object. Stored in
the Universal Repository, the function is now available to the enterprise
as a business service, to be accessed by any number of distributed
systems.

Universal Repository is the industry's first fully object-oriented
repository for concurrent access, sharing and updating of business
information. It is a dynamic, extensible information system that can be
used to define, integrate and manage business software components for
purposes such as application development, systems management and data
warehousing, which require well-integrated software.

The DAIS ORB, originally released to the market in 1993, is the world's
leading commercial implementation of the Object Management Group's Common
Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). An ORB provides the mechanisms
by which objects -- self-contained, encapsulated modules of data and the
processes that act on the data -- transparently make and receive requests
and responses. In so doing, it provides interoperability between
applications on different machines in heterogeneous distributed
environments and seamlessly interconnects multiple system objects.
Compliance to CORBA allows the Universal Repository to access, or to be
accessed by, a variety of other software products and is key to
integrating the Universal Repository and DAIS.

DAIS and Universal Repository integration demonstrated at Object World DAIS
2.1 -- the latest version of the ICL CORBA object request broker -- and
the Unisys Universal Repository are being demonstrated at Object World.
DAIS and the Universal Repository will also be demonstrating CORBA
interoperability as part of the Distributed Application Showcase. Multiple
Microsoft Windows applications will be demonstrated using the Unisys
Universal Repository's OLE automation interface to access information via
DAIS.

DAIS 2.1 provides a viable route for application developers within
independent software vendors and large commercial organizations to create,
maintain and control, commercial quality distributed applications that
conform to the CORBA standard. This software acts as middleware for
applications running on all sizes of configuration, from a single PC up to
enterprise-wide networks.

A wide choice of platforms and development tools, together with extensive
run-timemanagement features, make DAIS ideally suited for the flexibility
required for commercial applications. New gateways are provided for
integrating existing applications, transaction processing services and
databases, from DAIS and non-DAIS supported platforms.

Central to DAIS is a highly scalable, high-performance, reliable request
broker. Supporting this is a set of run-time services that provide
recovery, in-flight flexibility and administrative control functions.
Forthcoming versions of the product will include security, transaction
processing and CORBA 2.0 interoperability.

DAIS price and availability

DAIS is currently available on Windows NT, OS/2, UNIX on ICL, HP-UX, Sun
Solaris, SCO, VMS and ICL mainframes. Another nine platforms are planned.
Prices range from $1,500 to $10,000 for an entry-level system.

ICL is a leading information technology company specializing in systems
integration in selected markets. Operating in over 80 countries, with
23,000 employees, it generated revenues of $2.6 billion (approximately $4
