SYBASE ENABLES DATA WAREHOUSING FOR A BROADER MARKETPLACE

High-Performance SYBASE IQ Interactive Query Technology and Over 50
Industry Partnerships Combine to Create Cost-Effective Data Warehouse
Solution

EMERYVILLE, CA, August 7, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced the industry's first complete, open
solution aimed at building low-cost, high-performance client/server data
warehouses. Key to the initiative is SYBASE IQ, which is now in beta
testing at 24 customer sites. In addition to SYBASE IQ, the SYBASE
Warehouse WORKS initiative consists of an open architecture with a single
set of APIs, and the SYBASE Warehouse WORKS Alliance, which now consists
of over 50 alliance partners. Jointly, they provide Sybase customers with
an industry-leading selection of best-of-breed data warehouse technology
under one integrated framework.

SYBASE IQ is an extension of SYBASE SQL Server that will enable customers
to find data up to 100 times faster than a standard relational database.
For the first time, customers can achieve rapid responses to ad hoc
queries using their existing hardware platforms. SYBASE IQ's indexing
technology extends the power of data warehousing solutions to a broader
range of users for whom it was previously cost-prohibitive.

"Sybase's open architecture, optimized for decision support systems,
enables us to closely partner with systems integrators and leading
software developers to provide the most reliable and cost-effective
solution for data warehousing," said Mike Forster, president of Sybase's
InformationCONNECT Division. "The typical data warehousing project today
represents a three million dollar investment. With SYBASE IQ, we can lower
the entry cost by an order of magnitude and offer a level of performance
unavailable with today's parallel
solutions."

SYBASE IQ

SYBASE IQ, which was delivered to 24 beta customers in July 1995, provides
predictable interactive access to large amounts of data directly in the
warehouse. While offering up to 100-fold query performance improvement
over standard relational databases, SYBASE IQ slashes warehouse query
costs by orders of magnitude, requiring up to 80 percent less disk, up to
98 percent less I/O, and utilizing existing hardware.

In preliminary benchmarks conducted by Sybase, SYBASE IQ demonstrated
breakthrough performance for highly complex queries and real time
calculations on large amounts of data. Aggregates and counts on over 5.7
million records were completed in under three seconds, versus three to 30
minutes or more in other technologies. A complex database marketing query
finding customers in certain demographic groups between the ages of 30 and
59 meeting three different criteria, with a three-table join of 5.7
million, 8.1 million and 5.7 million records, was completed in 48 seconds.
In all, over 120 queries were completed with an average response of just
over one minute. Most importantly, response times remained constant,
whether 1, 5 and 10 users queried the system.

An optional extension for the SYBASE SQL Server, SYBASE IQ includes
patent-pending Bit-Wise indexing that allows significantly more data to be
processed in each instruction, resulting in up to thousands of times
faster performance without adding hardware. Beyond simple bit maps,
Bit-Wise indexing makes it possible to index every field in the
database--including character and numeric fields not supported by other
bit-map indexing schemes--in less than the size of the raw data,
substantially reducing disk costs over other approaches. SYBASE IQ indexes
provide a complete map of the data, eliminating table scans and directly
accessing just the information required, reducing I/O by up to 98 percent
and resulting in fast, predictable answers to any query.

Sybase Warehouse WORKS Alliance Program

A key component of SYBASE Warehouse WORKS, the Warehouse WORKS Alliance
Program now includes over 50 vendors, currently providing the industry's
largest collection of integrated solutions for Data Warehousing. Through
published APIs and innovative alliance partner programs, Sybase
technologies are optimized and tightly integrated to provide customers
with the best choices under one integrated solution. Furthermore, this
integrated approach can provide customers assurance that future releases
from Sybase and its partners will work together.

Partners in the program receive training on SYBASE software, specialized
support, and beta software for a head-start on integrating technology with
SYBASE. Partners recently added to the program include:

* Dun & Bradstreet Information Systems--The leading provider of corporate
data with information on 38 million businesses, Dun & Bradstreet plans to
incorporate SYBASE Warehouse WORKS technology into its D&B Market Spectrum
database marketing platform. D&B Market Spectrum is a decision support
platform that allows businesses to integrate and enhance their internal
information with Dun & Bradstreet information and other data sources to
support sales and marketing applications.

* EDS--EDS' dbINTELLECT Technologies (dbI) has provided consulting
expertise to Sybase for the past six months to define SYBASE Warehouse
WORKS requirements as well as an end-to-end warehouse solution for total
integration. SYBASE IQ will be integrated into dbI's warehouse
architecture.

* Price Waterhouse--The Price Waterhouse Management Consulting Service's
comprehensive approach to data warehousing, called Knowledge Management,
offers a proven methodology that combines information technology skills
(operational, organizational and business process expertise) with deep
industry knowledge. This approach has been used by numerous large
companies in all phases of data warehouse development--from strategy to
implementation.

* Prism Solutions--Prism Solutions is a leader in data warehouse management
software for building, maintaining and navigating data warehouses. Prism's
leading integration and transformation tool, Prism Warehouse Manager,
supports Warehouse WORKS, Sybase's leading open framework for developing
and deploying data warehouses.

Sybase Provides Interactive Data Warehousing

Data Warehousing has become a competitive necessity in many industries,
enabling pinpoint marketing, enhanced product profitability, and detailed
risk analysis. These benefits have created a market for data warehousing
that is expected to grow to over $2 billion by 1998, according to
International Data Corporation. However, warehouse access is often
restricted to a few select analysts at top companies, due to today's
multi-million dollar average investment and hardware-dependent query
times. Next generation warehouses must provide interactive access to a
wide range of data and hundreds of users at a dramatically reduced cost.

SYBASE IQ represents the first phase in providing interactive warehousing,
delivering rapid, predictable performance, on detailed data and complex ad
hoc queries, often at a cost of cents instead of dollars per query.
Through its comprehensive open Warehouse WORKS framework and industry
leading alliance program, Sybase will continue to offer best-of-breed
solutions to rapidly and cost effectively deploy, manage and use warehouse
information for competitive advantage.
