Software Exchange announces two new books for horse racing and computer
enthusiasts: Thoroughbred Handicapping the Computer Way and Harness
Handicapping the Computer Way, both by Howard Berenbon. They're written
for anyone interested in using his or her personal computer to aid in
handicapping at the races. They offer step-by-step instructions for
designing and programming thoroughbred and harness handicapping systems in
the BASIC language for the popular personal computers including IBM
compatibles, the Apple II series, the Apple Macintosh, the Atari, the
Commodore 64/128, the TRS-80 and the Sharp pocket computers. They're
composed of ten chapters including five devoted to horse racing
handicapping, one covering a bet return analysis program and another
offering additional resources.

Owning a personal computer is not a prerequisite for these books. Each one
includes a chapter to help the beginner choose his or her personal
computer, with suggestions on finding a suitable system for as low as
$100. And for those who haven't yet purchased a computer, there's even a
chapter detailing step-by-step instructions for horse racing handicapping
using a pocket calculator.

Horse racing enthusiasts will learn to program their own handicapping
systems using up to 26 past performance data items available from the
Daily Racing Form, for thoroughbreds, and the Harness Program, for harness
racing. Details include selecting the right data for the analysis,
assigning weighting factors to the data, creating the mathematical
formulas for manipulating the data and converting the formulas to BASIC
language programming statements for calculating a numerical rating for
each horse under analysis.

Also included in each book is a chapter on programming horse racing systems
using the popular electronic spreadsheet programs like Lotus 1-2-3 and
Microsoft Excel. A separate horse racing spreadsheet system is offered in
Chapter 9.

And finally, several completed and tested handicapping systems are
included, designed to run on most of the popular personal computers
including the laptops and pocket computers. The programs have been tested
at the racetrack, and the favorable results are detailed in Chapter 8.

Thoroughbred Handicapping the Computer Way retails for $19.95. ISBN
