SILICON SYSTEMS INTRODUCES ITS LOW-POWER, SINGLE-CHIP IC FOR COMBO
ETHERNET-PLUS-MODEM PCMCIA CARDS COMPLIANT WITH THE MULTI-FUNCTION
SPECIFICATIONS

TUSTIN, California, June 28, 1995 -- Building on its growing momentum in
the Ethernet LAN market, Silicon Systems, Inc. today extended its product
line by announcing the 78Q8378 single-chip Ethernet device which is
compliant with the new multifunction specifications for PCMCIA cards.
Silicon Systems will formally introduce the 78Q8378 at the IC Card Expo
'95 in San Jose in July.

Along with the built-in decoding functions which comply with the 3.0
specification for PCMCIA, the new 78Q8378 offers all the necessary
Ethernet functions on a single-chip including: Media Access Controller
(MAC) with full-duplex capability, 10 Mbit/s Manchester encoder/decoder
(ENDEC), a 10BaseT transceiver and an Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) for
connection to external coaxial transceivers. Also, the enhanced PCMCIA
device provides interface to parallel EEPROM/Flash memory for PCMCIA CIS
(Card Information Structure).

The 78Q8378 has very low power consumption and operates from either a
5-volt or 3.3-volt supply. To allow multifunction operation, two sets of
Function Configuration Register (FCR -formerly known as Card Configuration
Registers or CCR) are provided so that each function can be independently
configured.

Kirk Brinkworth, product marketing manager for Silicon Systems' local area
network products, commented, "The 78Q8378 offers PC card designers a
clean, extremely low-power solution for combo Ethernet-plus-modem PCMCIA
cards, underscoring Silicon Systems' commitment to providing the best
solutions for portable connectivity."

The 73Q8378 comes in a 120-lead TQFP with samples being available in August
1995. Priced at $15 each in quantities of 1000, production levels are
scheduled for Q3 of 1995.

Silicon Systems, a TDK group company, specializes in the design and
manufacture of application-specific, mixed-signal integrated circuits
(MSICs) used primarily in data storage and communications products.
