NEC VERSA 4000 NOTEBOOKS SHIP WITH NEW PHOENIX TECHNOLOGIES' SOFTWARE FOR
PORTABLES: NOTEBIOS 4.0 AND POWERPANEL

SANTA CLARA, CA (August 16, 1995) -- Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:
PTEC), a leading supplier of essential software for PC manufacturers,
announced that Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0, the first object-oriented Plug and
Play firmware solution for portable PCs, as well as PowerPanel, a new
unique Windows application for notebooks, will be shipping on the new NEC
Versa 4000 Series. Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0 and PowerPanel enable the NEC
Versa 4000 to provide high-performance, long battery life, and dynamic
docking in an easy to use, Windows 95-ready, mobile package.

"Because of the modular design of the NEC Versa 4000, we need a BIOS core
flexible enough to adapt to an exceptional array of hardware
configurations, said Bob Levin, director of product marketing for NEC's
Portable Systems Group. Our next-generation concept in modularity is the
NEC Versa 4000's VersaBay II, a front-loading slot that lets users change
their notebook on-the-fly through snap-in modules that include a CD-ROM
drive, a second hard drive, a second battery or a floppy drive. Phoenix's
NoteBIOS 4.0 provides the robustness we need for this uniquely
personalized mobile environment."

Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0, an evolution of the BIOS firmware that Phoenix
pioneered, provides the NEC Versa 4000 with support for a number of
advanced performance features, including the high-performance Intel
Pentium processor, Plug and Play support for Windows 95, enhanced IDE hard
drive support, and an optional internal ATAPI CD-ROM which can be used as
a bootable device. The new power management architecture of Phoenix
NoteBIOS 4.0 provides precise device and system power management for the
NEC Versa 4000, extending battery life while providing optimum performance
for the user. Phoenix NoteBIOS 4.0 for the NEC Versa 4000 also includes
Save to Disk, a feature which allows the user to enter a power management
state in which no power is consumed and then resume working. Save to Disk
can be used as an alternative to exiting all applications and shutting
down the computer, rebooting, and returning to one's application-saving
time and energy.

Phoenix PowerPanel, a unique Windows application that communicates with the
NoteBIOS 4.0 firmware, will be included on the NEC Versa 4000. PowerPanel
provides a simple and powerful floating toolbar interface to allow the
user to instantly change the power management behavior of the NEC Versa
4000 with a single click of an icon. PowerPanel also provides information
on system battery level and allows the user to control power to devices
and enter special power saving modes like Save to Disk.

The combination of the advanced NEC Versa 4000 hardware design and the
advanced Phoenix software design of NoteBIOS 4.0 will help make the NEC
Versa 4000 notebook a new milestone in high performance portable
computing," said Howard Cohen, vice president of Portable Systems for
Phoenix Technologies. "The NEC Versa 4000 extends a long-term
partnership, from which we expect more good things to come."

Phoenix, which pioneered Plug and Play technology by co-authoring the Plug
and Play BIOS specification and providing Microsoft with key Plug and Play
technology for Windows 95, supports dynamic docking on the NEC Versa 4000
with NoteBIOS 4.0, leveraging the Plug and Play standard to provide easy
and seamless expansion of the NEC Versa 4000.
