Uncasting Typo

Berkeley, CA--You see it everywhere these days, from magazines to
advertising materials: crazy typefaces--or "grunge fonts"--that seem to
break all the rules of legibility and readability yet pack a powerful
message. According to Robin Williams, award-winning author, "readability
and communication are not the same thing," and "type is about more than
readability." She proves that point over and over in her new book A Blip
in the continuum, the first book to spotlight and celebrate this new
aesthetic that is creating such controversy in the design community. (The
book's title actually came from the mouth of a well-known designer who
dismissed this new typography as "a blip in the continuum of graphic
design history.")

Throughout the book, quotes about type and design are set in a range of
grunge fonts, using rule-flaunting layouts. (Sometimes the quotes are only
marginally about type or design, but more about, say, aesthetics or life
or love, which, in the author's mind, are all entwined.) Each layout
contains a full-color illustration created with the Painter software
program. The off-the-wall illustrations form a bridge to the typography,
enhancing the reader's understanding of this new graphic movement. More
than 100 of the best new grunge fonts are featured in the book, which is
for graphic designers, illustrators, and computer users of every level who
want to understand this new aesthetic and feast on this eye-popping tour
of design's cutting edge. Blip comes with a disk containing 22 hot new
fonts.

Author Robin Williams is a graphic designer and desktop publishing
instructor whose books have won numerous awards. Her other books include
The Little Mac Book, The Non-Designer's Design Book, Jargon, and The Mac
is not a typewriter, all of which are best sellers. Illustrator John
Tollett, who has won his share of awards, works in a variety of media,
including drawing and painting in traditional oil, acrylics, and
water-color, as well as in electronic formats.
