                     Using csh and tcsh
                       By Paul DuBois
          242 pages, ISBN: 1-56592-132-1, $24.95

We've just released "Using csh and tcsh," the latest Nutshell Handbook for
UNIX users (available in bookstores in late August). csh (C shell) is the
standard shell, or command interpreter, on most UNIX systems, and tcsh is
an enhanced version that's freely available. "Using csh and tcsh" helps
you use csh or tcsh more effectively--it shows you how to get your work
done faster with less typing. It focuses on improving efficiency by using
these shells interactively at the command line, rather than writing shell
scripts. Interactive use is also emphasized over scripting and programming
because such tasks are better done with a different shell, such as sh (the
Bourne shell) or a language like Perl.

"Using csh and tcsh" shows you how to make your prompt tell you where you
are (no more pwd); use what you've typed before (history); type long
command lines with very few keystrokes (command and filename completion);
edit a botched command instead of retyping it; and how to let the computer
correct command spelling for you. The book includes a simple introduction
to the shell, and helps those familiar with the fundamentals build on the
skills they already have. It details tcsh's special features, and
describes how it builds on csh's capabilities to provide a more productive
working environment.
