NEW LOW-COST, POWER-EFFICIENT 14.4 FAX/MODEM PC CARD PACKS IN FEATURES AND
EASE-OF-USE

New Media's 14.4 WinSurfer Windows-based Modem is The First PC Card to Draw
Zero Power in Sleep Mode

IRVINE, Calif., August 7, 1995 -- New Media, a leading developer and
manufacturer of portable computing solutions, today introduced the 14.4
WinSurfer, a low-cost, full-featured, Windows-based fax/modem PC Card for
portable computers. Designed using the company's proprietary Zero
Consumption APM (Advanced Power Management) technology, the new 14.4
WinSurfer is the industry's first PC Card designed to draw zero power when
not in use.

The 14.4 WinSurfer comes complete with the company's suite of ease-of-use
tools including Auto-Install, Knowledge Bank, Sniffer, Integrated
Messaging and built-in remote diagnostic software. Auto-Install is an
installation and configuration program which analyzes the machine's PCMCIA
software, loads all of the necessary driver software and application
software under one compliant interface, and edits the appropriate system
files. Also included is Knowledge Bank, a troubleshooting and information
resource; Sniffer, a general diagnostic utility program; and Integrated
Messaging, an interactive on-line error detection and troubleshooting
program.

"Because PC Card power usage is critical to portable computer users, we
developed Zero Consumption APM so our customers can leave the card in the
slot without worrying about reducing battery life," said Carl Perkins, New
Media's president. "The typical user stores cards in their laptop whether
using them or not. With Zero Consumption APM, the card does not use any
power until the modem is accessed. A typical PC Card in standby mode can
use as much as 25 percent of the laptop's power when not in use. With two
cards in the slot, twice as much power will be used reducing laptop
operating time by half."

New Media's Zero Consumption APM technology makes the 14.4 WinSurfer the
most power-efficient PC Card on the market. The 14.4 WinSurfer card draws
only 110mA (milliamps) of current in operating mode, 24mA in idle mode,
and no power when Zero Consumption APM is enabled.

High-Performance Modem for Windows-Based Applications

Unlike other approaches to providing low-cost PC Card modems, New Media has
engineered an entirely new design. By developing a modem specifically for
Windows, New Media was able to eliminate the digital modem controller
chip, effectively cutting the required modem hardware in half. By
developing a "soft modem," updates can be made quickly and easily by
upgrading our software. New Media's virtual controller software
architecture, coupled with either 486 or Pentium-based laptops, provides a
highly efficient environment for running intensive tasks such as data
compression.

Once the 14.4 WinSurfer Auto-Install is complete, a WinSurfer Utilities
group will be displayed as an icon in the users' Program Manager. The
WinSurfer group contains online manuals for the 14.4 WinSurfer as well as
Delrina's WinFax and WinComm, New Media's diagnostic and setup program for
the 14.4 WinSurfer, and technical notes update.

Feature-Rich Modem Provides Effortless Communications Solution

The 14.4 WinSurfer is capable of transferring data at rates up to 19.2kbps
and sending and receiving faxes at 14.4kbps. Error correction and data
compression maximize data transfer integrity and boost average throughput,
enabling the 14.4 WinSurfer to achieve a sustained data rate to 76.8kbps.

The new PC Card modem supports Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups and is
designed to support Windows 95. Additionally, it provides users with auto
dial and answer, as well as tone and pulse dialing.

"The addition of 14.4 WinSurfer to our complete line of modem products
gives users a full-featured, low-cost modem solution which allows them to
effortlessly access important data while on the road," said Perkins. "This
modem, coupled with our suite of ease-of-use tools, provides the average
consumer with everything they need for hassle-free, on-the-go computing."

Expands Product Line of Advanced Modems

The 14.4 WinSurfer is the latest addition to New Media's family of PC Card
data/fax modems. The 28.8 NetSurfer, 14.4 NetSurfer and 14.4 NetSurfer
International are approved data/fax modems for Windows, DOS and OS/2
environments.

As with all New Media products, the 14.4 WinSurfer ships with New Media's
Auto-Install program, plug-and-play client drivers, Zero Consumption APM,
remote diagnostics, Knowledge Bank, and Sniffer. Delrina WinFax LITE fax
software and WinComm LITE communications software are included for full
data communications functionality.

Pricing and Availability

The 14.4 WinSurfer is currently available with an expected street price of
$100 to $120. Like all New Media products, the 14.4 WinSurfer modem is
backed by a lifetime warranty and is FCC Class B certified for both home
and office use.
