NETSCAPE INTRODUCES NETSCAPE SMARTMARKS AND NETSCAPE CHAT

APPLICATIONS BRING NEW NAVIGATION AND COMMUNICATIONS CAPABILITIES TO USERS
OF NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR FOR WINDOWS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (August 22, 1995) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced Netscape SmartMarks and
Netscape Chat, two applications designed to make Internet navigation and
communications even easier for users of Netscape Navigator software. The
public beta versions of Netscape SmartMarks and Netscape Chat for the
Microsoft Windows operating environment are available immediately for
downloading from Netscape's home page.

The two new products are among the first commercial applications built upon
the Netscape Client Application Programming Interface (NCAPI), bringing
new capabilities to the Netscape Navigator environment. Netscape
SmartMarks enables Netscape Navigator users to easily collect, organize,
and monitor their favorite Internet addresses. Netscape Chat allows both
novice and experienced Internet users to participate in real-time chat
forums using Netscape Community System software or industry-standard
Internet Relay Chat (IRC).

"Netscape SmartMarks and Netscape Chat integrate tightly with Netscape
Navigator to deliver advanced capabilities to users," said Mike Homer,
vice president of marketing at Netscape. "Netscape Navigator is an ideal
platform for building these kinds of complementary applications, enabling
integration of applications such as those from Adobe, Progressive
Networks, and Macromedia."

Netscape SmartMarks, developed in cooperation with software developer
FirstFloor, Inc. of Mountain View, California, comes pre-configured with
Yahoo's "Top 350" web sites, organized by popular categories such as
sports, entertainment, or news. The product also allows users to monitor
their favorite Internet addresses or URLs (universal resource locators),
and efficiently organize them into customized desktop folders.

Netscape SmartMarks also provides:

* Monitoring, which automatically checks user-specified web pages for
updates and notifies the user on page or link changes. Monitoring helps
save time and keeps users abreast of changing URLs

* Easy management of large amounts of bookmarks through a hierarchical
folder interface

* Point-and-click search capabilities for popular Internet directories
including Yahoo, InfoSeek, Webcrawler and Lycos. Frequently used searches
can be saved and monitored so that the user can receive automatic
notification of new web sites that meet the search criteria

* Informative "bulletins", allowing web site authors to automatically
deliver new information to their customers

* Advanced organization features that enable users to import existing
Netscape Navigator bookmarks, add custom descriptions and comments to
bookmarks, define category folders, and drag and drop bookmarks from
folder to folder.

* Netscape Chat integrates with Netscape Navigator and provides users with
powerful tools for communicating in real-time over the Internet for
entertainment or business purposes.

* Netscape Chat can be used for customer support, to deliver training, for
conducting product launches or hosting special interest discussion forums.
Netscape Chat works with any site running Netscape Community System or IRC
Server. Netscape Chat includes:

* Multiple chat communication modes: personal conversations (one-to-one),
group conferences (many-to-many), and auditoriums (one-to-many)
Information sharing, by enabling users to send and view URLs. All users on
the chat discussion can concurrently view a web page in their Netscape
Navigator window

* Advanced customization features. Users can customize a "phone book" to
include a list of frequently visited chat rooms and maintain an ordered
list of URLs so that guided tours or training workshops can be conducted

The public beta versions of Netscape SmartMarks and Netscape Chat are
available for immediate downloading from Netscape's home page at
http://home.netscape.com/. The products are free for use by students and
staff of educational institutions and charitable non-profit organizations,
and for 90-day evaluation for individual and corporate users. Pricing for
Netscape SmartMarks and Netscape Chat is $24.95 each. Final versions of
both products are scheduled to be available in September 1995.
