Lighting of Empire State Building Commemorates the Arrival of Microsoft
Windows 95

New York City Landmark Joins the Worldwide Upgrade Celebration

New York, NY - Aug. 24, 1995 - Tonight, as the lights of the Empire State
Building begin to glow in the logo colors of the Microsoft Windows 95
operating system -- red, yellow and green -- one of New York City's
greatest landmarks joins in the celebration of the most widely anticipated
phenomenon in computer history, the launch of Windows 95. Microsoft
Corp.'s fourth logo color, blue, will be represented by the indigo of New
York's skyline.

The lighting of the Empire State Building begins at sunset, approximately
8:15 p.m. -- it takes roughly one half an hour for the colors to reach
their full brilliance -- and continues until midnight, when the lights are
turned off for the evening.

Over the past few months, the expected arrival of Windows 95 has generated
a steady build of excitement around the world. The line-up of sky-scrapers
and national landmarks involved in the launch is testament to this high
level of international interest.

While the Empire State Building is aglow with the symbolic colors of
Windows 95, events will also be held at the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada;
Leicester Square in London, England; Palais des Congres in Paris, France;
Queen's Street in Auckland, New Zealand and St. Stephen's Cathedral in
Vienna, Austria. The Philippines will culminate its celebration with a
hand-off of the first package to President of State Fidel Ramos.
Additional launch events will take place all over the world, including
Russia, Poland, Singapore, Spain and Hong Kong.

The color-lighting system began in 1976 when the Empire State Building was
ablaze in red, white and blue to celebrate America's Bicentennial. Since
then, this specialty lighting has been granted to only a handful of
organizations. According to the Empire State Building's Director of Public
Relations, Lydia Ruth, the correlation between lighting the "World's most
famous building" and Windows 95 was an easy one to draw.

"Since its opening in 1931, when the first experimental transmission of
television took place, the Empire State Building has always been involved
with new technology," says Ruth. "We are excited to be a part of the
world-wide launch celebrations of Windows 95."
