IBM Announces Availability of OS/2 Warp on Compaq Servers

SmartStart Upgrades Include OS/2 Warp, LAN Server 4.0

AUSTIN, Texas, August 8, 1995 . . . IBM today announced the availability of
the award-winning OS/2 Warp, IBM TCP/IP 2.0, and the market-leading
application server, LAN Server 4.0, on Compaq Computer Corporation's
SmartStart version 2.3, the newest version of its integration tool for
installing and integrating reliable servers.

"We're pleased to work with Compaq to ensure that their servers take
advantage of the high-performance and flexibility of OS/2 Warp, the best
selling 32-bit operating system," said John Soyring, director of strategic
relations, IBM Personal Software Products division. "The addition of the
latest versions of OS/2 and LAN Server to the SmartStart upgrade further
strengthens our relationship with Compaq, and ensures that our customers
continue to receive the benefit of choice with an open, non-proprietary
operating system."

"Compaq and IBM are working together to provide customers with a convenient
solution that best meets their installation, configuration and integration
requirements," said Jeff Erramouspe, director of software marketing,
Compaq Systems Division. "This commitment to offer OS/2 products on Compaq
servers illustrates our interest in integrating a wide selection of
optimized platforms for our customers."

Compaq and IBM have been working together since 1991 to ensure the highest
level of quality, compatibility and integration of OS/2 and related
software products with Compaq hardware platforms.

SmartStart is Compaq's method of distributing, installing and optimizing
industry standard operating systems on Compaq servers to ensure a reliable
and supportable configuration. Shipped with Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia
servers, the SmartStart CD-ROM package contains encrypted operating
systems and software which can be unlocked simply by purchasing activation
keys from Compaq. Software purchased from Compaq through SmartStart is
competitively priced with software purchased from other vendors.

Compaq's SmartStart version 2.3 contains the following software from IBM:

  OS/2 Warp
  OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS2
  OS/2 2.11
  OS/2 2.11 for SMP
  TCP/IP 2.0
LAN Server 4.0 (Entry and Advanced)
LAN Server 3.01 (Entry and Advanced)
  LAN Requesters

Future versions and upgrades of OS/2 Warp and LAN Server via SmartStart --
including IBM's recently announced OS/2 Warp Connect -- will be fully
supported on Compaq servers and available on SmartStart.

LAN Server 4.0 is a member of the full line of personal systems software
including the award-winning OS/2 operating system and LAN products for
remote access, multimedia, systems and network management, database and
transaction processing, and communications. It features unmatched
usability, interoperability and scalability and is available on a variety
of operating system platforms, including OS/400, AIX, MVS and VM.

IBM's OS/2 family of products continues to build momentum and industry
support as a mission-critical client/server platform. To date, the 32-bit,
preemptive multitasking operating system has garnered several dozen
industry awards and was named "Product of the Year" in 1995 by InfoWorld,
PC World, and BYTE magazines. It also won the Software Publishing
Association's (SPA) 1995 CODIE Award for Best New Business Software
product.
