HP'S NEW PREPROCESSOR SUPPORTS INTEL'S P6 LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

Palo Alto, California. August 8, 1995

Continuing its support of leading-edge technologies, Hewlett-Packard
Company today introduces a preprocessor interface for the Intel P6
microprocessor that works with the HP modular logic-analysis system.

"This new preprocessor interface - which makes it easy for customers to
watch P6 bus transactions in action - is a perfect example of why we're
the No. 1 supplier of logic-analysis tools," said Patrick J. Byrne, R&D
manager for systems-development tools at HP's Colorado Springs Division.
"We're constantly looking for ways to make our customers' jobs easier, and
we're there with the right technologies."

The HP E2466B preprocessor interface for the Intel P6 processor supports
full-speed operation of the P6 multiprocessor bus. The preprocessor's
transaction-tracker software makes it easy for users to track the
operation of the P6 processor. If several transactions are pending on the
bus at the same time, the transaction-tracker software keeps track of the
start and end of each bus phase and presents a state listing of bus
activity grouped by completed transactions. Transaction duration, measured
in bus clocks, is summarized at the end of each listed transaction. This
summary speeds interpretation of bus operation. Also, bus-timing diagrams
- displayed as waveforms - are overlaid with status information for quick
identification of bus conditions.

When used with the HP prototype analyzer and the HP 16500B logic-analysis
system, the new preprocessor provides a visual representation of the most
meaningful system-design data, which shortens the time it takes designers
to investigate critical P6-processor-system problems.

Key features of the HP E2466B include the following:

* Each phase of a transaction is displayed in order of occurrence, clearly
identifying requests, snoops, errors, responses and data;

* Each request type - such as memory read, I/O write and code read - is
identified in the listing display; and

* Filters allow users to display only those operations they need to see.
