HP, MICROSOFT TO PROVIDE SCORING SYSTEM FOR THE SPRINT INTERNATIONAL GOLF
TOURNAMENT

Palo Alto, California. August 8, 1995

Hewlett-Packard Company and Microsoft today announced they will provide the
most advanced scoring and information-retrieval system in the 10-year
history of the PGA's Sprint International golf tournament in Castle Rock,
Colorado.

In the largest joint project of its kind by the two technology companies
for a major golf event, Microsoft will combine its much-anticipated
Windows 95 operating system, Windows NT Server and other Back Office
technology with HP's latest hardware and networking equipment to bring the
public, players and media the most comprehensive tournament reporting
ever.

Together, HP and Microsoft will provide nearly $1 million in computers,
printers, networks, software and staff support for the tournament.

The Sprint International is being held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle
Rock, Colorado, Aug. 14-20. Among others expected for the $1.5 million
tournament are 1994 U.S. Open champion, Ernie Els; 1990 Sprint
International winner, Davis Love III; and defending champion, Steve
Lowery.

The Microsoft/HP scoring system, called the Tournament Entertainment and
Education (TEE) System, reflects the changing way in which golf
enthusiasts and other sports fans are receiving information in today's
high-speed, multimedia, on-line environment.

Up-to-the-minute leaderboard standings, player progress and profiles,
interviews, course information, video flyovers, statistics, tournament
history and analysis - even World-Wide Web access on Sprint's home page -
will be generated by the system.

"We are excited about seeing Windows 95 perform in this prestigious and
highly visible golf event," said Microsoft Desert Mountain District
Manager, Bruce Huebner.

The company's Windows 95 operating system is scheduled for public release
Aug. 24.

The tournament, which is broadcast by ESPN on Thursday and Friday and by
CBS on Saturday and Sunday, has grown in popularity with viewers. Some 5
million people watched the Sunday finale of the 1994 Sprint International,
the year's second-highest-rated golf telecast, trailing only the Masters
Tournament.

"We are proud to be associated with Microsoft in a sports event of this
caliber," said Richard C. Watts, HP vice president and general manager of
the Personal Information Products group (PPG). "We recognize the growing
popularity of golf - and the golf business - in this country. And we are
responding to the demand by all sports fans for faster, more specialized
information."

The Sprint International is one of 44 events on the PGA Tour tournament
schedule this year, with more than $72 million in total official prize
money. Golfing has increased in popularity in the last 10 years, with a 42
percent increase in rounds played since 1985. Some 24.3 golfers will play
on more than 15,000 U.S. courses, with more than 400 new courses scheduled
to open this year, according to the National Golf Foundation.

Adding to the unique atmosphere of the Sprint International tournament,
players compete in a modified Stableford points system rather than stroke
play. Points are awarded for birdies and eagles, and subtracted for
bogeys. Par is zero. Defending champion Steve Lowery won last year with 35
points. This is the only PGA tournament to use this system.

How the Scoring System Works

Immediately after play is completed on each hole, the scoring information
is radioed to Scoring Control. Updated point totals, standings and other
data is then instantly relayed back out to the scoreboards and HP PCs
located in the press room, clubhouse, skyboxes, cottages and elsewhere
throughout the venue.

With the click of a mouse, spectators, players and media will have
up-to-the-minute information - plus real-time video clips, hole flyovers
and player interviews - at their fingertips.

For Internet users, much of the same information also will be accessible
during the tournament on Sprint's home page on the World-Wide Web,
(http://www.Sprint.com) and will be linked to both HP's
(http://www.HP.com) and Microsoft's (http://Microsoft.com) home pages by
"hot links."
