HP COLOR RESOLUTION ENHANCEMENT TECHNOLOGY

Hewlett-Packard Company's HP DeskJet 850C printer is the first inkjet
printer to offer advanced color technology for a dramatic increase in
color text, graphics and image print quality. HP's Color Resolution
Enhancement technology (C-REt) is a method of controlling how much is ink
applied to each pixel. This method achieves dramatic improvements in color
print quality without increasing resolution, using special paper or
sacrificing print speed.

Inkjet printing achieves the 16.7 million possible color variations by a
process known as halftoning: grouping tiny clusters of different primary
colors that approximate a particular tone in much the way a television
screen groups dots of red, green and blue.

C-REt improves color printing by offering a larger number of shades and
hues. Previous color inkjet printers offered eight different color choices
for each pixel on a page, which gave approximated colors a grainy texture.
The DeskJet 850C printer with C-REt offers up to 64 color and grayscale
choices for each pixel, producing smooth, gradual dither patterns and
halftones.

The key to C-REt's improved print quality is the technology's ability to
control the intensity level of each individual pixel. C-REt works with an
advanced print head to create smaller, rounder dots that are about half
the size of dots using earlier techniques. These smaller dots can be
layered on top of each other to offer four levels of intensity: off,
light, medium or full.

C-REt provides a wider assortment of color intensities for HP's ColorSmart
technology than ever before. ColorSmart selects the optimal color or
grayscale tone for text, graphics and photographic images separately,
automating the color-printing process in much the same way autofocus
cameras simplified 35mm photography.
