HP INTRODUCES PRINTER MADE WITH RECYCLED PLASTIC

Project Could Divert 6 Million Pounds of Plastic from Landfills

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 31, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, the world's
leading supplier of printers, today announced the company's first products
to be made with recycled plastic -- the DeskJet 850 printers.

The DeskJet 850 printer series, HP's most advanced personal color inkjet
printers, will contain up to 25 percent recycled ABS plastic in their
outer casings.

We expect to use more than 6 million pounds of plastic that otherwise could
end up in landfills, said Jim Langley, general manager of HP's Vancouver
(Wash.) Printer Operation. It's an exciting step forward for the industry
and shows what a tremendous impact can be made when you design products
for the environment.

The use of recycled plastic in products is a major milestone for HP's
product stewardship program, an ongoing effort to make the company's
products more environmentally sensitive.

The HP DeskJet printer product-stewardship team worked closely with HP
design engineers and procurement professionals to test and evaluate a wide
variety of recycled plastics to ensure that the new DeskJet printers are
as durable as those made from virgin plastic.

The DeskJet 850 printers are designed for easy disassembly and recycling.
They feature a modular architecture that contains few permanent screws,
which makes them faster and easier to take apart. In addition, all plastic
parts in excess of three grams are identified and marked by type.

The DeskJet 850 printers use fewer materials than previous models because
they are molded using a process known as thin-walling, which creates
thinner and lighter plastic. The lighter printers require fewer shipping
materials.Because they are lighter to ship, trucks consume less fuel
during transport.

All DeskJet printers are inherently energy-efficient; they use
approximately 80 percent less energy than dot-matrix printers and meet the
requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star
program. The new DeskJet 850 printers feature improved power-down and
sleep modes, which reduce energy consumption by half compared to other
inkjet printers.
