Microsystems Software Announces Cyber Patrol Internet Access Management
Utility

Cyber Patrol lets parents and teachers control children's access to the
Internet.

Monday, July 31, 1995, Framingham, Mass. -- Microsystems Software, Inc.
today announced the availability of an Internet access management utility
that will help parents and teachers control children's access to the
Internet.

Cyber Patrol allows those responsible for children's access to the Internet
to restrict access to certain times of day, limit the total time spent
on-line in a day and block access to Internet sites they deem
inappropriate (including WWW, ftp, gopher, Internet Relay Chat and Usenet
newsgroups) all via a simple, easy to use interface. Cyber Patrol can also
be used to control access to the major on-line services and other local
applications such as games and personal financial managers. Cyber Patrol
comes loaded with the "CyberNOT Block List", a listing of researched
Internet sites containing material which parents may find questionable.
Using the CyberNOT List, parents can reinforce their own personal values
as they adjust children's access to specific internet sites. The list is
divided into categories and access can be managed down to the file
directory or page level. This means that appropriate material at an
Internet IP address need not be blocked due to the presence of restricted
material elsewhere at the address. Parents and teachers may select all or
any of the categories to be blocked by general content, time of day, or
specific Internet site.

"While this product does not intend to make value judgments for other
people, it affords appropriate decision-making control to adults who are
responsible for internet access and viewing by minors," said Nigel Spicer,
president and COO of Microsystems Software. "Parents, teachers, day care
professionals -- anyone who is responsible for children's access to the
Internet will benefit from Cyber Patrol, because it gives them the tools
they need to get a handle on an area which can be very dangerous for
kids."

About Cyber Patrol

Cyber Patrol allows parents to manage computer use in their own
household(s), by providing control over Internet access, use of local
applications, and the times of day and total time in a day that children
are allowed to use the computer. Cumulative duration of Internet and other
application use is captured, allowing daily, weekly and monthly reporting.
In addition to providing a useful overview of computer usage, these
reports can also be used as independent verification of on-line service
provider and telephone bills.

The initial release of Cyber Patrol for Windows, which is shipping now,
will block access from any computer that uses WINSOCK-compliant Internet
applications such as Netscape, Microsoft Network or CompuServe to access
the Internet. Cyber Patrol for Macintosh, which will ship August 21, 1995,
will intercept calls to the Macintosh TCP driver. Currently, users
accessing the Internet through the America Online or Prodigy browsers,
which use a different method, cannot block access, however, the parent can
control the use of these applications by elapsed time and time of day.
Future releases will address this issue, and will be made available to
registered users.

Cyber Patrol loads during start-up and runs in the background, controlling
access to all associated applications. Cyber Patrol is accessed via
password, and offers two levels of parental password control:
"Headquarters", the master password which establishes parameters
for Internet and application access, and "Deputy", a password
which allows an authorized guardian to bypass restrictions. The Deputy
password automatically resets at midnight, disabling "Deputy" access.

Cyber Patrol blocks access to WWW, ftp and gopher by site name (down to the
file directory or page); Usenet, by newsgroup name (including a wildcard*
extension) and Internet Relay Chat (IRC) by both name and identified
words/phrases. Executables files on PCs, such as the programs for the
major on-line services and games, can be blocked by both time of day and
cumulative duration. Several safeguards are included in Cyber Patrol,
including controls which prevent children from disabling Cyber Patrol or
simply renaming blocked applications.

The CyberNOT Block List

The sites on the Cyber NOT Block List are reviewed by a team of
professionals at Microsystems, including parents and teachers. They use a
set of criteria that categorizes Internet sites and resources according to
the level of possibly objectionable content. The categories include:
Partial Nudity, Nudity; Sexual Acts/Text; Gross Depictions; Racist/Ethnic;
Gambling; Satanic/Cult; Drugs & Drug Culture; Militant/Extremist;
Violence/Profanity; Questionable/Illegal and Alcohol, Beer & Wine. Parents
can select the categories of content that they wish to block, and can
allow access to any site on the CyberNOT List which they deem appropriate.
Parents can also deny access to additional sites not included on the
CyberNOT List, and can control/block access to the major on-line services
as well as other defined applications such as games. The CyberNOT List is
updated weekly and can be automatically downloaded via the Cyber Patrol
software. Microsystems encourages parents to report sites for addition to
the CyberNOT list. All reported sites are researched thoroughly before
they can be included on the list.

"Microsystems will incorporate industry standards in this area as they
emerge. Product improvements will also evolve based on consumer feedback,"
said Mr. Spicer.

Pricing

List price for Cyber Patrol is $49.95, which includes a 6-month
subscription to the CyberNOT Block List. Subsequent 6-month subscriptions
will be available for $19.95 each. Cyber Patrol will be available for
