CONVEX AND HP LAUNCH JOINT EUROPEAN COOPERATIVE TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Richardson, Texas August 21, 1995 -- Convex Computer Corporation today
announced the launch of a joint Cooperative Technology Center with
Hewlett-Packard Company. The new center, the first joint Convex and HP
venture of its kind in the world, is located at HP's Computer Systems
Organization's European Headquarters in Boeblingen, Germany.

According to HP, the Cooperative Technology Center will provide in-depth
consulting and technical services for customers of Convex's leading-edge
Exemplar scalable parallel processor (SPP) systems, based on HP's PA-RISC
technology and compatible with the HP-UX operating system. A Convex
16-processor SPP1000/XA high performance system will be available for
benchmarking, software tuning and other pre-sales activities.

Key development

The announcement is particularly significant for customers in mechanical
design analysis (MDA), electronic design analysis (EDA) and oil and gas,
who are interested in cutting time-to-completion of compute-intensive
tasks by deploying highly parallelized applications.

"The Cooperative Technology Center represents a major step in the further
development of the strategic cooperation between Convex and HP. It will
enable prospects and customers to use a high-performance system which
allows them to attack problems that workstations and symmetric
multiprocessing (SMP) servers can't solve. The capability to do this
without giving up full compatibility with the desktop environment is
unique in the industry," said Hans Derksen, Convex's channel manager,
Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"Convex, with its leading-edge scalable parallel processing (SPP) systems,
extends the HP product line for applications that require
supercomputer-class performance. The establishment of this joint
cooperative technology center is a key development for HP customers in
Europe. Now, customers who are deploying or developing highly parallelized
applications can receive software and hardware consultancy from an
experienced joint team at a single location," said Nick Savander, HP's
director of marketing, technical systems, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

In-depth services

The center will deliver in-depth engineering services relating to the
deployment of HP and Convex products and technologies. These services will
include:

* Technical support for systems sizing and configuration of Convex
  products.
* Execution of benchmarks for parallelized applications.
* Porting and tuning of parallelized applications.
* Customer needs analysis and implementation support. Coordination
of HP and Convex technical competence for pan-European projects.

The center will also offer post-sales activities such as project support
and coordination, implementation assistance and beta release support.

Strategic cooperation

The establishment of the Cooperative Technology Center extends the scope of
the existing agreements between HP and Convex, under which HP sells,
supports and markets the Convex Exemplar series through its computer sales
force worldwide.

According to HP, the combination of HP and Convex is ideally suited for
customers seeking ways to replace traditional supercomputing centers
within their enterprises. The Convex SPP series aims to provide customers
with affordable supercomputer power which is available where and when they
need it. The new center provides them with the opportunity to easily
undertake a proof-of-concept for scalable parallel processing.
