CII: WINDOWS 95 WILL SHIP 62 MILLION UNITS IN FIRST 12 MONTHS

Largest Software Upgrade in History Offers Follow-On Opportunities

LA JOLLA, Calif., August 24, 1995 - New research from Computer Intelligence
InfoCorp (CII), the computer and communications industries' leading source
of fact-based information, indicates that Microsoft's Windows 95 operating
system will ship close to 62 million units worldwide in the first 12
months of its availability. Windows 95, destined for both new and existing
PCs, became available for purchase today. The majority of copies will be
bundled with new PCs.

CII data further project that cumulative worldwide shipments of Windows 95
will reach 81 million units by the end of 1996, at which time it will be
the operating system on 34% of the world's PCs.

"Windows 95 will move from a standing start to one third of the world's
installed base of PCs in only 17 months," asserted David Tremblay, CII's
Senior Industry Analyst for PCs. "This dwarfs everything we've seen
before, and represents the largest first-year shipment of software that's
ever occurred. By contrast, Windows 3.0, which was released in May 1990,
shipped just under 7.5 million units in its first 12 months. The only
things keeping Windows 95 numbers from going higher, faster, are hardware
availability and businesses' evaluation and adoption cycles."

Estimated Worldwide Initial 12-Month Shipments of Microsoft Windows

Operating System Release Date 12-Month Shipments

Windows 3.0 June, 1990 7,480,000
Windows 3.1 May, 1992 25,146,000
Windows 95 August, 1995 61,961,000

"Follow-on opportunities will be tremendous - a potential 'Win-fall 95' for
sectors of the software and hardware industries," commented Tremblay.
According to CII, PC software that takes advantage of the new capabilities
of Windows 95 will see fast-rising sales in the next 12 months. For
example, CII research indicates that there are 15 million Windows suites
packages such as Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite and Novell
PerfectOffice currently installed - all are candidates for upgrades to
Windows 95 versions, though not all will choose to upgrade or be able to
do so.

Hardware upgrades offer another substantial market opportunity. For
example, to run Windows 95 adequately, a PC requires a 486 or better
processor and at least 8 megabytes of memory (RAM). CII data show that,
worldwide, there are 28 million PCs with adequate processors, but
insufficient memory, to run Window 95. These PCs represent very fertile
ground for memory upgrade sales in the coming year.
