BORLAND ANNOUNCES CODEGUARD FOR BORLAND C++ 4.5

New Tool Helps Software Developers Find and Fix Bugs Fast

SAN DIEGO -- August 7, 1995 -- Borland International Inc. today announced
CodeGuard for Borland C++ 4.5, a powerful debugging tool that allows
software developers to automatically locate and diagnose the most
difficult memory bugs in 16-bit Windows applications. Because it enhances
manual debuggers, CodeGuard saves hours of debugging time.

"We've designed CodeGuard to make software programming easier," said Tamah
Swenson, Director of Languages Marketing at Borland International. "Since
so much of a software developer's time is spent debugging applications,
using CodeGuard will allow them to slash development time while boosting
the quality of their applications."

Find Bugs Fast

CodeGuard was designed to find bugs that often evade the most comprehensive
testing, including memory leaks, invalid memory references, memory
overruns, and uninitialized data access. Unlike traditional interactive
debuggers, CodeGuard automatically catches errors most likely to cause
data corruption, as they occur. With CodeGuard, developers can work
directly within the Borland C++ integrated development environment (IDE),
which provides a single seamless environment to detect, diagnose,
investigate, and fix bugs.

Fix Bugs Fast

Since CodeGuard works within the Borland C++ 4.5 IDE, programmers do not
need to switch back and forth between separate tools while they debug
their applications. To CodeGuard-enable an application, the user simply
selects the CodeGuard option from within the IDE. And since no source code
changes are required, CodeGuard is easy to use. Once a bug is detected,
CodeGuard displays detailed information about the error in the IDE Message
Window, including a description of the problem, the source line where the
error occured, a complete stack trace, and where memory was allocated
(when applicable). Programmers can then double-click on the message and
jump directly to the line of code that caused the error or to where memory
was allocated, thus allowing for easy bug fixes. In addition, CodeGuard
automatically validates API function parameters and return values for
those functions most often responsible for memory corruption. This, in
turn, speeds up the debugging process and saves developers time. CodeGuard
also includes a configuration utility that lets developers select the
specific types of errors they want to detect and allows them complete
control over their debugging.

"CodeGuard is an outstanding product. I've mystified myself with all the
bugs I've found that I didn't know existed," said Michael Giroux at Bull
HN, a high-end computer manufacturing company. "Since CodeGuard easily
tracks bugs, it has greatly increased my productivity."

"Because CodeGuard is so easy to use, our developers now leverage CodeGuard
to act as their first line of quality assurance so that we find bugs
earlier in the development process and so our QA resources can focus on
other types of testing--further increasing our product quality," said
Jothy Rosenberg, Director of Languages Research and Development at Borland
International.
