BBN INTRODUCES BBN/STATSWISE FOR ANALYZING NETWORK PERFORMANCE

Product Features Quick and Efficient Collection, Storage and Analysis of
Network Data

CAMBRIDGE, MA, August 14, 1995 -- BBN today announced immediate
availability of BBN/StatsWise, a new network performance analysis tool
designed to help network managers respond more quickly to networking
issues by collecting, storing, and viewing network data in a variety of
customizable graphical formats. BBN/StatsWise enables network managers to
perform trend analysis, solve configuration problems and perform capacity
planning, allowing them to dramatically improve the effectiveness of their
networks while reducing their costs.

Marty Lyons, manager of network operations for America Online Inc. (AOL),
said, "To maintain the highest level of service, it is crucial to
anticipate network performance degradations before they can affect users.
America Online relies on its high performance network to provide the best
service in the industry. Our network engineers use BBN/StatsWise to
collect and interpret the network statistics needed for proactive
performance tuning. As the AOL network grows, BBN/StatsWise provides
critical data used for capacity planning and network architecture."

Using BBN/StatsWise software, end users have the option either to graph
their information with one of the several preformatted graphs or to design
one of their own.

Since all the data on the graphs is dynamically linked, changes in any one
point are automatically reflected in every view. In addition,
BBN/StatsWise has built-in graphical tools that enable end users to create
presentation-quality reports, making it easier to share the results of
graphs and reports with other network managers.

BBN/StatsWise is capable of providing information gathered by its own
SNMP-based poller, which is engineered for quick and efficient collection
of network statistics. All data collected by the poller is adapted to
account for certain events, including router resets and counter
wrap-arounds. Data can also be synchronized at the request of the user.
Synchronization time-stamps the data at a specific interval, making views
of the data more uniform and useful to the user.

BBN/StatsWise can also make use of data gathered from a variety of network
platforms including SunNet Manager, HP OpenView and Cabletron Spectrum.
All network statistics are then stored in the BBN/StatsWise database,
which is specifically designed for storage of sparse time-series data. The
unique ability of BBN/StatsWise to compare information from many sources
and explore their relationships helps network managers to make important
strategic decisions, such as new equipment purchases. Also, the
flexibility of BBN/StatsWise enables end users to save data over a period
of time, allowing them to do long-term analysis and network planning. This
helps network managers determine reconfiguration requirements and new
equipment purchases.

"Today's network managers are faced with the challenge of making sure their
networks run problem-free," said Judy Tymon, BBN/StatsWise product
manager. "BBN/StatsWise is a perfect starting point for determining the
health of a network; this combined with BBN's history of technical
expertise in networking can provide long-term benefits and ensure maximum
efficiency."

BBN/StatsWise is immediately available through BBN, with prices starting at
$17,000. Additional information may be obtained by calling
1-800-825-4730.

Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, BBN (Bolt Beranek and Newman
Inc., NYSE:BBN) is a leading provider of Internet access and
internetworked systems that help people work and learn together. For its
fiscal year ended June 30, 1995, BBN had revenue of $215 million.
