Apple Reaffirms Commitment to UNIX Compatibility, Introduces MacX 1.5

Major Upgrade Supports X Window System Version 11, Release 5 and is
Accelerated for the Power Macintosh

BOSTON, Massachusetts--August 7, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
MacX 1.5, a first step in reaffirming its commitment to UNIX
compatibility. MacX 1.5 is an enhanced version of the company's
easy-to-use software for high-performance X Window System computing on
Macintosh and other MacOS-based systems. MacX helps increase the
productivity of Macintosh users in UNIX/VMS environments by enabling them
to seamlessly run both network-based X applications and Macintosh
applications on one Macintosh computer.

MacX 1.5 greatly improves UNIX compatibility, enhances performance and
continues to provide ease of use. New in MacX 1.5 is support for the X
Window System standard: Version 11, Release 5 (X11R5). Compatibility with
this widely adopted standard further increases customers' productivity by
enabling them to run the latest X client applications on their Macintosh
computers. To enhance customer productivity further, Apple optimized MacX
for accelerated performance on PowerPC-based computers while maintaining
high performance on 680x0-based Macintosh systems.

MacX 1.5 continues to provide the ease of use associated with Apple
products. The product provides one-button installation and full support
for Macintosh System 7 user-interface features. MacX 1.5 seamlessly
integrates the Macintosh and X environments, allowing customers to
customize the software so that they can launch frequently used X
applications simply by choosing commands from pull-down menus. Customers
can also cut and paste text and color graphics between the Macintosh and X
environments. And, customers view X applications in familiar Macintosh
windows for easy moving and resizing.

MacX 1.5 also provides customers with:

-- Support for multiple network protocols, permitting full use of TCP/IP,
DECnet and AppleTalk

-- Support for the X Display Management Control Protocol (xdm), allowing a
network administrator to manage X terminals and workstations from a single
host

-- Support for both the rexec and rsh UNIX connection methods

-- Additional bundled software including Fetch 2.1.2, Telnet 2.6, InterPPP
II 1.0, MacPing 3.0 Pro, Stuff It Expander 3.5.2, and Adobe Acrobat Reader
2.0.1

System Requirements

MacX 1.5 runs on any Macintosh with a 68030 processor or higher, or any
PowerPC-based computer running System 7.1 or higher. MacX 1.5 requires 5MB
of RAM for 680x0-based systems (8MB recommended) and 8MB of RAM for
PowerPC processor-based systems (16MB recommended), a hard drive and local
or network access to a CD-ROM drive. Access to a UNIX or VMS host via one
of the following connections--Direct Ethernet or Token Ring; LocalTalk
bridged to Ethernet; or Remote Access via PPP, SLIP, or ARA--is also
required.
