Apple Announces OpenDoc DR3 Release With Improved Tools Support

BOSTON, Massachusetts--August 8, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
the availability of its OpenDoc Developer Release 3 for Apple Macintosh
personal computers. With this third important milestone behind it, Apple
is currently on schedule to ship the golden master of OpenDoc for
Macintosh this fall, as promised. OpenDoc DR3 adds stabilization to the
feature-complete version of the OpenDoc component software tool kit
shipped to 50,000 developers worldwide in May 1995.

"We're pleased that OpenDoc is proceeding on schedule," said Ike Nassi,
Apple Computer's vice president, systems software technology. "As was
evidenced by the increased developer support it received at PC Expo in
June, momentum for OpenDoc is growing strong. Each milestone we meet is a
testament to our confidence in and commitment to this technology."

The current iteration of the OpenDoc Developer Release CD now includes a
pre-release version of the OpenDoc Development Framework (ODF), an
object-oriented framework developed in C++ and targeted for building
cross-platform OpenDoc component editors. ODF simplifies the process of
building an OpenDoc component editor by implementing much of a component
editor's default behavior. Additionally, users of Metrowerks 6.0 and
OpenDoc will find supporting material to enable the development of OpenDoc
components with Metrowerks 6.0.

Also included in the OpenDoc DR3 for Macintosh is a pre-release version of
Novell's AppWare which produces OpenDoc components. According to Ed
Firmage, Novell's director of marketing for NetWare development tools,
"OpenDoc will provide vertical market developers with unprecedented
opportunities for integrating their technologies. We expect that AppWare
will play an important part in providing solutions to this market."

In addition, OpenDoc DR3 for Macintosh includes an improved version of the
Container Application Library (CALib), which offers developers an easy way
to add OpenDoc support to existing applications.

According to Bruce Sargent, president of OnBase Technology, Inc., "OpenDoc
will allow us to focus our engineering efforts on our real
expertise--manufacturing operations--without having to re-invent the
underlying technology. Our engineers can more easily share functions among
our applications. Additionally, OpenDoc will provide us with the
opportunity to purchase, from other developers, basic functions such as
report writers and schedule calendars, thereby reducing our time to market
for new projects."

Interested developers can obtain the DR3 version of the OpenDoc component
software tool kit for Macintosh by requesting a CD at Internet address:
opendoc@apple.com or completing a request form that can be accessed
through Apple's new OpenDoc home page that debuted on-line, July 12,
1995.

The OpenDoc home page includes colorful graphics with clickable hyperlinked
images, on-line feedback forms, and instant downloading of sample
components, marketing materials and technical documentation. Features of
the site include OpenDoc Overview (a wide range of information about
OpenDoc); Developer Showcase (highlighting the work of Macintosh OpenDoc
developers); Developer Depot (tools, resources, and event calendars); and
OpenDoc in the News (the latest press releases, news, and links to OpenDoc
articles, and related speeches). The OpenDoc home page on the World Wide
