Apple Expands and Enhances Developer Tools and Services

Macworld, BOSTON, Massachusetts--August 8, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
demonstrated its commitment to foster innovation in computing technology
with an expanded and enhanced portfolio of developer products and
services. Featured at the Macworld Developer Central Pavilion, these
enhancements include new and updated tools products; enriched online
information vehicles; expansion of value-priced developer programs, and
more convenient, economical training options.

"To remain competitive, developers who rely on Macintosh technology need
affordable access to best-of-breed tools, information and support," said
Ike Nassi, vice president, Apple System Software Technology. "That's why
Apple continually invests in improvements across the complete range of
developer products and programs. Anyone who previously thought our tools
were limited or our programs were costly will be pleasantly surprised when
they reexamine Apple's developer resources."

New and Enhanced Developer Tools

In addition to offering new products such as Oracle Power Objects, an
object-oriented client/server tool for rapid deployment of Windows and
Macintosh database applications, Apple has upgraded the following
developer tools:

MAC OS SDK (SOFTWARE DEVELOPER'S KIT) #4

Issue 4 of the Mac OS SDK includes complete programming information and
application programming interfaces (APIs) for the latest extensions to the
Mac OS: Display Manager, QuickDraw 3D, QuickTake Digital Camera and
QuickTime Conferencing. The Mac OS SDK is a collection of powerful
technologies and related programming information which helps developers
add support for many Mac OS system extensions. Each quarter, Mac OS SDK
subscribers automatically receive CD-ROMs with the most recent version of
system software extensions, programming interfaces and libraries, sample
code and technical documentation.

OPENDOC DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK (ODF) 1.0d9

With availability of OpenDoc Development Release 3, announced today, Apple
is delivering a pre-release version of ODF. Like MacApp, Apple's framework
for building standalone Macintosh applications, ODF is a collection of
software libraries with rich functionality and interconnections that
provide an infrastructure for component development. Apple's newest C++
object-oriented framework, ODF is designed to help developers easily build
OpenDoc component software for deployment across heterogeneous computing
environments.

MACINTOSH COMMON LISP (MCL) 3.0

Apple and Digitool, Inc. have jointly produced the latest version of this
object-oriented programming language, which compiles and generates highly
efficient code. Introduced today, MCL 3.0 is a standards-compliant,
object-oriented dynamic language--ideal for quick application prototyping
and custom development for business, education, scientific and engineering
applications.

MPW PRO #18 (MACINTOSH PROGRAMMER'S WORKSHOP)
E.T.O.: ESSENTIALS--TOOLS--OBJECTS #18

Release 18 of MPW Pro and E.T.O. include final candidate versions of the
next major releases of the Power Macintosh Debugger, MrC/MrCpp (C/C++
compilers that generate highly-optimized code for Power Macintosh
systems), and SC/SCpp (C/C++ compilers that generate code for Motorola
680x0-based Macintosh systems). Additionally, both products now include
electronic documentation in the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format,
for easy access and navigation.

MPW Pro is a general-purpose C/C++ programming environment. A complete
suite of developer tools on CD-ROM, MPW Pro includes a development
environment, compilers, the MacApp application framework, debuggers, and
testing tools. It also includes introductory tutorial manuals and complete
electronic documentation. E.T.O. includes all MPW Pro software, plus
Symantec C++ for Power Macintosh, the suite of Inside Macintosh books on
CD-ROM, and complete printed tools documentation.

NEWTON TOOLKIT (NTK) 1.5 AND NEWTON BOOK MAKER 1.1

Recently announced, NTK 1.5 features a new NewtonScript compiler and
profiler, which enable software developers using Mac OS-based computers to
create faster applications for the Newton platform. A productive,
high-level, object-oriented development system, NTK makes it possible for
developers to bring products to market more quickly for the Newton
platform than for other PDA platforms.

Newton Book Maker 1.1, now sold separately from the Newton Toolkit, allows
even novice users to easily create interactive books, travel guides,
reference manuals, and corporate documentation for PDA devices based on
Apple's Newton technology. This tool helps users automatically generate
visually rich, easy-to-navigate applications from electronic documents.

APPLE MEDIA TOOL (AMT) - CX MEDIA DATABASE EXTENSION

Now available to users of AMT and the AMT Programming Environment (Apple's
multimedia authoring tool suite), the AMT CX Media Database Extension
provides access to CXBase Pro, a powerful, cross-platform database engine.
Authors of reference titles, catalogs, kiosks, online books and
interactive magazines can create new versions simply by changing media
assets in the database.

Already, the AMT CX Media Database Extension has been used to author 10
popular commercial titles, including World Cup Soccer, Ferrari, Porche and
Ulysses, as well as the August 1995 product reference CD-ROM for Apple's
field organization and reseller network.

Online Access to Developer Information

Developers now have access to a wealth of information about Macintosh
technologies, products and services via the Internet World Wide Web (WWW)
on Apple's home page (http://www.apple.com). The home page's Developer
Services area has recently been enhanced to include Apple Directions
(Apple's monthly developer newsletter); the Macintosh Developers Guide;
course descriptions and schedules; online training; sample code; pointers
to usenet newsgroups and other development servers, and a "What's Hot"
page.

Within the Developer Services area, Developer Programs information has been
expanded to include the new Apple Multimedia Program WWW site
(http://www.amp.apple.com). The site, which was announced today, is
designed to serve the needs of both current and prospective program
members. Information on new products, services and enrollment, and a
searchable directory of program members is located in this area.

The QuickDraw 3D (QD3D) area on the Apple home page has also been updated.
This collection of "test drive" applications, models and specifications
now includes final QD3D system software for downloading by Power Macintosh
users.

Expanded, Enriched Developer Programs

MACINTOSH DEVELOPER ASSOCIATES PLUS MEMBERSHIP

This fall, Apple will extend its new Macintosh Developer Associates Plus
membership program to the European development community. Introduced last
spring in the U.S., Associates Plus membership includes a monthly mailing
of the Apple Developer CD and the Apple Directions newsletter, plus Mac OS
SDK subscription and assistance with 10 technical support requests a
year.

DEVELOPER UNIVERSITY (DU) COURSE ENHANCEMENTS AND REDUCED PRICES

To prepare developers for Apple's latest technology advancements, DU has
introduced new classroom courses that cover ODF, QuickDraw 3D and
QuickTime VR, AppleGuide and AppleScript. Later this month, new
Toronto-based DU Extension site, Simon/Ross & Associates, will launch its
DU curriculum with a QuickStart Mac OS Programming class. This five day
"fast track" course teaches developers to write a standalone Mac OS
application in C language that is compatible with systems based on both
Motorola 680x0 and PowerPC processors.

For those who seek self-paced training, DU has made this option more
affordable by reducing single-copy prices by as much as 40 percent. DU has
also released multi-copy packages of key self-paced courses. Five- and
10-pack bundles further reduce the per-copy price of each course, and
include a reproduction license for the manuals, so instructors may reuse
these materials.

The Mac OS SDK, MCL 3.0 (for corporate and educational users), NTK 1.5,
Newton Book Maker 1.1, and DU's self-paced products are now available from
APDA, Apple's source for development tools and related programming
