3Com Impact Digital Modem Breaks the 'Net Surfing Speed Limit

Analog Modem Users Now Considered "Sunday Drivers" on the 'Net

August 21, 1995 -- SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The first digital modems to break
the 'net surfing speed limit are now shipping from 3Com Corporation
(NASDAQ:COMS). The new 3Com Impact ISDN external digital modems are the
first to support Multilink PPP support -- a new standard which fully
exploits the high speed capability of ISDN. The 3Com products enable
corporate, small business, and home users to access the Internet, online
services, and office networks at 128 Kbps -- four times faster than the
latest analog modems and twice as fast as existing ISDN installations.

The 3Com Impact digital modems, with Multilink PPP and with Multilink PPP
and a V.32bis analog modem, provide the fastest dial-up network access on
the market. Both products incorporate a dynamic bandwidth allocation
feature allowing simultaneous use of both ISDN channels for either data,
data and voice, or data and fax.

With the built-in 14.4 Kbps fax/modem, 'net surfers are backward compatible
to online services, BBSs, and colleagues not yet using ISDN. In addition,
for Macintosh users or those with one available communication port, having
digital and analog capabilities in a single device is especially
important.

All 3Com Impact external modems integrate a standard analog voice port
permitting use of existing phone and fax equipment to communicate over
ISDN. 3Com Impact products also integrate the NT-1 network terminating
equipment making installation hassle-free and less expensive.

"Users working in a small office or at home want products that are fast,
simple and reliable -- just plug it in and go," said Reginald Best, vice
president for 3Com's Access Products Group. "That's exactly what this
product family offers. With easy-to-use, graphical configuration and
diagnostic software, users simply enter the ISDN line parameters and the
product tests the line automatically. Finally, users don't have to be
techies to communicate using ISDN networks."

SPEED DEMON OR SUNDAY DRIVER?

The need for high speed, low cost network access is driving the call for
widespread deployment of ISDN. Analog connections may still be required
for mobile applications, but for desktop Internet and remote LAN access
applications, such as downloading Web graphics and sound, electronic mail
links, teleworking, and after hours working, consumers are looking to
ISDN.

3Com Corporation has helped more than 22 million people gain access to
critical information through high-speed networks. Designed to serve large
enterprises, small offices and homes, 3Com products provide a scalable
architecture to meet the immediate and long-term connectivity needs of
today's users. With research and development on three continents, 3Com is
one of the data networking industry's largest and fastest growing
companies. The company's innovative manufacturing, marketing, sales and
support simplify communication, optimize network reliability and protect
customer investments.
