Synopsys announces the Accord VBX chemistry add-on, now making it possible
to develop chemical applications using Visual Basic

20 April 1995 -- Synopsys Scientific Systems Ltd. today announced the
Accord VBX chemistry add-on for Microsoft Visual Basic. The Accord VBX
add-on provides an unique range of chemical capabilities within Visual
Basic's powerful visual programming environment. Now, with the Accord VBX
chemistry add-on, users can develop fully-functional, chemically-aware
applications in Visual Basic quickly and easily.

Once installed, the Accord VBX adds its Chemistry Control icon to the
standard Visual Basic Toolbox. Visual Basic users can then drag-and-drop
the programmable Chemistry Control onto a form. Because the Accord VBX
Chemistry Control is just like any other Visual Basic control, it is very
easy to use most operations are simply point-and-click selections from a
menu.

The Accord VBX Chemistry Control provides a rich set of properties, methods
and events which can be used to configure chemically-aware applications
directly within Visual Basic. The control not only provides events that
are standard in Visual Basic, such as a Click Event, but also a set of
chemical capabilities that facilitate the development of chemical
applications. Included, are methods for matching chemical structures,
reading and writing chemical formats and calculating chemical properties.

An important visual element of the Accord VBX Chemistry Control is its
ability to display chemical objects, such as molecules, in publication
quality on a Visual Basic form. Layout options allow users to adjust the
display to their specific requirements; for example, setting the atom font
or background colour. With the Accord VBX Chemistry Control, cut & paste
to ChemDraw, ChemWindow or ISIS/Draw is straightforward, allowing
structures to be edited as required. Users can even enter a SMILES string
and the Accord will generate atom coordinates and render the structure in
publication quality.

Linking an Accord VBX Chemistry Control on a form to a Visual Basic Data
Control makes it 'data aware'. This means chemical objects stored in a
relational database field can be displayed and manipulated via the Accord
VBX Chemistry Control. In a matter of minutes, a simple chemical
application can be configured for use. Users can take advantage of Visual
Basic's ability to link to relational databases, such as Microsoft Access
and SQL Server, either locally or over a network, to create powerful,
client-server, chemical applications. A range of 3rd-party ODBC Drivers
provide links to Oracle, Ingres and a host of other corporate relational
database systems.

With the Accord VBX chemical properties, such as molecular weight and
percent composition, can be displayed a form. As a user navigates through
a dataset, property values are automatically updated thanks to Visual
Basic's event-driven architecture. Functions are also provided to allow
the Accord VBX to be used in conjunction with the Accord Software
Development Kit (SDK). So power users can take advantage of additional
capabilities in the Accord SDK, such as fast substructure searching.

Dr. Glen Hopkinson, Managing Director at Synopsys, commented: "Chemical
application development can be costly and time-consuming. Now, with the
Accord VBX, thousands of Visual Basic users will be able to configure
chemical applications in a matter of hours or minutes, when previously it
would have taken a more experienced developer days or weeks. The
productivity gains from using visual programming environments, such as
Visual Basic, are impressive. This, combined with the chemical awareness
of the Accord VBX Chemistry Control, makes it a winning combination."

Compatibility

The Accord VBX chemistry add-on is compatible with Visual Basic 3.0 or
higher. It can also be used in other visual development environments that
support Version 3.0 compliant VBXs. Chemical editors, such as ChemDraw,
ISIS/Draw and ChemWindow, can be used in conjuction with the Accord VBX
Chemistry Control and Accord supports a variety of chemical interchange
standards, including SMILES, SMD and MDL formats. The Accord VBX is fully
compatible with other Accord desktop products, including the Accord SDK
and the Accord for Microsoft Excel chemical spreadsheet.

The Accord VBX - Pricing and Availability

Version 1.0 of the Accord VBX chemistry add-on is available now, initially
priced at 395 [British Pounds] ($595 in the USA). A run-time version is
also available, which makes it very cost-effective to field end-user
Visual Basic applications that utilise the Accord VBX. A five user
run-time license pack is available, for an introductory period, priced at
395 [British Pounds] ($995 in the USA). Contact Synopsys for further
pricing details.
