SYBASE SHIPS ENTERPRISE SQL SERVER MANAGER; LEADS INDUSTRY TREND TOWARD
SUPER-SCALABLE ADMINISTRATION OF DISTRIBUTED RDBMS

Breakthrough Product Makes DBA Tasks Faster, Less Expensive; Eases
Interoperability With Third-Party Solutions

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 10, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced the general availability of
Enterprise SQL Server Manager, the breakthrough, object-oriented database
administration (DBA) solution. Enterprise SQL Server Manager, based on the
Tivoli Management Framework from Tivoli Systems, Inc., is the only
generally available DBA product that enables simultaneous control of
hundreds of SYBASE database servers, making administration faster and
cheaper. In addition, Enterprise SQL Server Manager integrates easily --
and in multiple ways -- with third-party management tools, providing IT
professionals with unmatched flexibility to choose the systems management
products that best meet their needs.

"Since its introduction last August, Enterprise SQL Server Manager has been
greeted with strong praise for its object-oriented architecture,
automation features and adherence to industry standards," said Mark
Hoffman, president and CEO of Sybase. "We're excited to be leading the
trend of using the emerging industry standard Tivoli Management Framework
(TMF) for highly scalable, interoperable systems management solutions. The
fact that numerous other client/server vendors have followed our lead in
developing products using TMF means that customers will have common way to
manage products from multiple vendors including IBM, Informix Software,
Inc. and PLATINUM technology, inc.

Customer Feedback

Customer praise for Enterprise SQL Server Manager has been strong. "We are
deploying a SYBASE SQL Server at each of our 500 retail outlets in Ontario
this year, but even with this growth we have no plans to increase the size
of our DB administration staff," said Kamran Tebandeh, systems analyst at
Brewers Retail in Canada. "After using Enterprise SQL Server Manager, I
believe that the product's functionality and scalability will allow us to
pull off this feat."

"We must deal with the complexities of managing more than 40 SYBASE SQI
Server databases dispersed throughout Florida. Based on our beta testing
of Enterprise SQL Server Manager, the product will go a long way toward
streamlining and simplifying this job," said Rick Vinton, system
programmer at Florida Power and Light. "It's exciting to see the robust
DBA capabilities that were enjoyed for years on the mainframe side being
made available for client/server systems."

"Enterprise SQL Server Manager makes the job of administering our
geographically disperse SQL Servers substantially easier," said an
administrator for a global financial services company. "After using this
product to manage databases in New York, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong, I've
found that nothing else comes close in terms of functionality and ease of
use."

Two Challenges: Scalability and Interoperability

Praise for Enterprise SQL Server Manager can be attributed to how it
overcomes two critical systems management challenges: scalability and
interoperability. While some vendors are strong in one area, Sybase is the
clear leader in addressing both.

The Scalability Challenge: Administration Of Multiple Servers

Until recently, client/server systems were typically deployed for
departmental applications encompassing a relatively small number of
database servers and users, and relatively small, uncomplicated database
environments. But as client/server has grown in acceptance, it has been
increasingly deployed for mainstream, mission-critical applications.

These systems now include dozens or even hundreds of distributed databases,
an increasing number of users and increasingly complex database
environments. Administering databases one-at-a-time, which is currently
the typical method, is becoming more expensive and time-consuming as the
number and complexity of database servers grows. In addition, the number
of administrators managing these systems in many enterprises is growing,
making it increasingly difficult to enforce consistent rules and
procedures.

The Sybase Scalability Solution

Enterprise SQL Server Manager addresses these challenges through its
object-oriented design which enables administration functions to be
performed on multiple servers simultaneously. These functions include
status and event monitoring; security and space utilization management;
backup and recovery operations; management of database objects such as
users, groups and segments; start and stop directives; and configuration
directives.

"Enterprise SQL Server Manager drastically reduces the time needed to
perform redundant tasks. For instance, I can add a user name to three
servers in just one step instead of the three separate steps," said
Florida Power and Light's Vinton. "Functionality like this gives DB
administrators the simplicity and automation that they deserve."

Enterprise SQL Server Manager can also be programmed to respond to
predefined database events, or automatically perform backups and other
functions at scheduled times. In addition, Enterprise SQL Server Manager
enables senior administrators to define rules and examples in the software
that can guide junior-level administrators. These features free senior
administrators from routine and redundant operations, allowing them to
focus on more critical issues such as identifying bottlenecks, tuning
databases, and optimizing database configurations.

"The administrative policies that we plan to build into Enterprise SQL
Server Manager will help me manage hundreds of SQL Server databases
consistently and efficiently," said Tebandeh of Brewers Retail. "And our
administrators won't have to worry about the fact that we're running
Windows NT at our retail outlets and SunOS in our headquarters -- it's all
handled transparently."

The Interoperability Challenge: Combining Diverse Management Products

A second major challenge is enabling diverse administration products to
interoperate. A stellar DBA product has limited value if it can't
cooperate with products that administer system hardware, operating
systems, application software and databases from other vendors.

"In managing an enterprise, customers use multiple management products.
Interoperability is key because it offers customers maximum flexibility in
choosing the system management tools that best meet their needs," said
John Mandile, vice president of systems management products at Sybase. "We
are committed to offering products that, in addition to providing optimal
administration of our databases -- which is our area of expertise -- also
give third-party products easy access to Sybase monitoring and
administration functions."

The Interoperability Solution

Enterprise SQL Server Manager addresses the need for interoperability by
offering three different industry-standard methods of sharing data with
third-party products.

Interoperability With Other TMF-Based Products

The first method of interoperability is via the TMF-based architecture of
Enterprise SQL Server Manager. When used in combination with other
TMF-compatible management products, TMF provides the basis for a
fully-integrated system, database, and applications management solution.

Using TMF, a systems manager can control resources from multiple vendors as
if these resources were a seamless whole. For instance, a systems manager
could use a single application to schedule operations for all
TMF-compatible management components including those for multiple
databases, operating system software and application software.

"In a multivendor client/server environment, this level of seamless,
simultaneous control is critical," said Frank Moss, CEO and president of
Tivoli Systems. "Systems managers gain easy, single-step management of all
systems components."

Among the 35 vendors who have committed to TMF are Data General and Unisys
(hardware), Sybase, PLATINUM technology, inc. and Informix Software, Inc.
(database administration), BGS Systems, Inc., EMC Corporation, IBM
Corporation, Landmark Systems Corporation, Remedy Corporation, Scopus
Technology and Unify Corporation (systems, network and applications
management).

SNMP Interoperability

The second method of interoperability is through the simple network
management protocol (SNMP), an industry standard for communicating
high-level system management information including database events. Sybase
is a founding member of the Internet Engineering Task Force which defined
the RDBMS management information base (MIB) for SNMP.

Using SNMP, the Sybase environment can communicate such basic information
as whether a database is operational, whether there is sufficient disk
space and how many people are using a particular database. This
information can be integrated and used by system management consoles, such
as those from Hewlett-Packard, IBM, SunSoft and Tivoli, which also adhere
to the SNMP standard.

"The delivery of SNMP agents with Enterprise SQL Server Manager gives IT
professionals a key, industry-accepted level of integration," said Robert
Hoog, general manager for Hewlett-Packard's Network & System Management
Division. "HP OpenView OperationsCenter and Network Node Manager customers
will be able to use SNMP to monitor SYBASE SQL Server products throughout
an enterprise".

Command Line Interoperability

Software vendors and end users can also access all of the functionality of
Enterprise SQL Server Manager through the product's command line
interface. This allows the creation of products that, through simple
commands, can launch Enterprise SQL Server Manager functions including
adding users and performing backups -- simultaneously and on multiple
servers. All of the sophisticated object-oriented services available on
Enterprise SQL Server Manager can be accessed and extended by third-party
applications.

In addition to the integration features of Enterprise SQL Server Manager,
Sybase is making available its SQL Server Monitor API, designed in open
partnership with key ISVs, to further promote integration with third party
products.

Pricing and Availability

Enterprise SQL Server Manager is available now on the SunOS, Sun Solaris
and HP-UX platforms. The product is scheduled to be available on the
RS/6000 platform in the second quarter of 1995 and a version for the
Windows NT platform is planned. Pricing ranges from $900 to $33,500 per
managed SQL Server, depending on platform.

Sybase in Database Administration

Database administration is one of Sybase's four key areas of product focus
which also include RDBMS servers, interoperability and software
application development tools. Sybase has been offering database
administration products since 1990 with its release of SA Companion.
Today, in addition to SQL Server Manager, Enterprise SQL Server Manager
and SQL Server Monitor, Sybase's systems management products include
Backup Server for on-line backups, Audit Server for enhanced security
environments, Replication Server Manager for replication management and
Gateway Manager for heterogeneous data access.
