SQL SERVER MONITORING API PROVIDES THIRD PARTIES WITH EASIER ACCESS TO
SYBASE DATABASE PERFORMANCE DATA

Detailed Information Provided By SQL Server Monitor API Will Ease
Development of Third-Party Management Products; Give Customers Maximum
Choice And Flexibility In Selecting Systems Management Solutions

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 10,1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that leading third-party systems management
vendors in its Systems Management Alliance program will use the SYBASE SQL
Server Monitor API to develop products that interoperate with the SYBASE
SQL Server environment. SQL Server Monitor, which is currently scheduled
to be generally available mid-1995, provides detailed SYBASE database
performance information. The API for this product will enable third
parties to display SYBASE database performance statistics with performance
data from other client/server system components, providing customers with
maximum choice and flexibility in selecting systems management products.

Among the vendors planning to use the Sybase API are BMC Software, Candle
Corporation, Compuware Corporation, Landmark Systems Corporation,
OpenVision, PLATINUM technology inc., and Relational Data Systems. In
addition, three software partners -- DataTools, Inc., EMC Corporation, and
Legato Systems, Inc.--are planning to use yet-to-be-announced integration
points to develop products that incorporate SYBASE data.

The Sybase SQL Server Monitor API provides software partners with a stable
development target, making it easier to create and maintain systems
management solutions. This stability will result in a greater number of
third-party products for Sybase customers. In addition, the API makes it
easier for Sybase end-users to create and maintain their own custom
applications.

"Sybase is setting the pace in database administration," said Mark Hoffman,
president and CEO of Sybase. "Customers confirm that Sybase's Enterprise
SQL Server Manager is a clear leader among database vendor offerings (see
related release). And the activity of third-party partners demonstrates
Sybase's open architecture and commitment to providing maximum freedom of
choice to its users."

An Advantage Over System Tables

Database vendors commonly offer system tables as a way for third parties'
products to access database performance data. Unfortunately, system tables
can change with each new version of the database code, forcing third
parties to rewrite their programs with each new "dot" release of the
database software. Sybase's SQL Server Monitor API represents an advantage
because it is unaffected by new releases of the underlying SQL Server
code.

Because of this stability, the API makes it easier for software partners
and customers to create and maintain products that access detailed Sybase
database information. The SQL Server Monitor API, which was developed with
the help of key systems management partners, including BMC Software,
Compuware, Landmark Systems, PLATINUM technology, inc.., and OpenVision,
will be generally available in June.

Software Partner Comments

"Today BMC Software's PATROL suite of application management products
offers comprehensive data management and problem resolution for Sybase's
SQL Server 10," said Jim Juracek, senior vice president of research and
development for BMC Software. "We look forward to exploring technologies
like Sybase's SQL Server Monitor API that would enable BMC to deliver more
robust and more tightly integrated application management solutions to
Sybase customers."

"The Sybase SQL Server Monitor API is a robust source of data for
Compuware's systems management products, including EcoTOOLS and the newly
announced EcoPMON for SYBASE," said Joe Nathan, president and COO of
Compuware Corporation. "Close cooperation between Compuware and Sybase
will enable both companies to expand the capabilities of our mutual
client/server systems management products. We are committed to utilize
Sybase's new facilities, like the API, to provide tools to keep
mission-critical SYBASE applications running at peak levels of efficiency
and availability."

"The improved and increased access to Sybase SQL Server data that this API
provides should be very beneficial for our users," said Andrew Filipowski,
president and CEO of PLATINUM technology, inc.. "Our current
administration, management, and monitoring products for Sybase --
including DBVision, Desktop DBA, SQL Commander, SQL Port, and SQL Spy --
will be able to use this API to reach more detailed database information
than is currently available."

SQL Server Monitor

SQL Server Monitor, the follow-on version of the currently available SQL
Monitor, provides a comprehensive set of performance statistics for the
easy evaluation of SYBASE SQL Server operation. Through its graphical
displays, administrators can quickly isolate problems and configure the
SQL Server for optimal performance. The product will be generally
available in June.

For developers who want to obtain database performance information from
Sybase system tables instead of the SQL Server Monitor API, or who want to
view high-level events via the simple network management protocol (SNMP),
those options are available as well. "We're committed to offering the
maximum number of interoperability choices to our partners and customers,"
said John Mandile, vice president of systems management products at
Sybase.
