SYBASE ANNOUNCES NEW INDUSTRY SOLUTIONS PROGRAMS

Focused Programs Target Industries Undergoing Rapid Business Change

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 4,1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced SYBASE Industry Solutions, a focused approach for
delivering solutions to customers in industries undergoing rapid business
change. Sybase Industry Solutions combines vertical industry expertise,
strategic partnerships, and an open, adaptive client/server architecture
to deliver comprehensive information solutions. Initial industries
supported by the program include healthcare, oil and gas,
telecommunications, insurance, and financial services.

"Businesses must act quickly, intelligently, and responsively in today's
globally competitive marketplace," said Mark Hoffman, Sybase's president
and chief executive officer. "Through the Industry Solutions programs,
Sybase is committed to delivering the right solutions to enable these
industries to leverage their information technology investment as a
competitive weapon--both to increase ROI (Return on Investment) and ensure
future growth."

"Sybase is taking an aggressive approach to attain leadership in strategic
markets," said Jeff Leopold, director of client/server computing for The
Yankee Group. "The combination of industry-focused teams, influential
partners, and Sybase's industry-leading technology provides the company
with a competitive advantage in markets with significant opportunity."

Sybase Industry Solutions programs have dedicated resources throughout the
company, including sales, marketing, engineering, channels, and
professional services. Programs for the healthcare and oil and gas markets
are currently underway. Telecommunications, insurance, and financial
services are scheduled to be launched during the second quarter of 1995.
The program builds on Sybase's existing expertise, partners, and customers
in these market segments, as well as government and manufacturing. Sybase
will target additional industries for focused programs as market
development warrants.

Customers Select Sybase for Expertise and Architecture

"Our transition to a client/server environment was based on Blue Cross'
critical need to provide superior customer service through improved
management of important data," said Greg Benedict, manager of technical
services for Blue Cross of California. "With an established customer base
in the healthcare industry, Sybase provides us with the performance,
flexibility, and openness we need as a health care player in order to
provide superior customer service now and in the future."

Focused Approach Sets Sybase Apart

"Sybase has taken a unique approach to delivering value-added solutions to
customers in industries undergoing transformation," said Paul Albright,
Sybase's director of Industry Solutions. "Competitive models offer limited
solutions. For example, Sybase's global, cross-company team differs from
the consulting-oriented Oracle model that is narrowly defined and services
North America only. In addition, our open, adaptive client/server
architecture differentiates Sybase within these markets from a technology
perspective when compared to a database-centric approach from the
competition."

The Sybase Industry Solutions programs feature industry-specific veterans
leading its penetration into the target vertical industries. To date,
industry experts from both the health care and oil and gas markets have
joined Sybase to drive these efforts. Dedicated industry directors for
insurance, telecommunications, and financial services will be added over
the next couple of months.

Dr. Gary Vasey is the director of Sybase's Oil and Gas Industry Solutions
program. Vasey brings more than 14 years of operations and consulting
experience in the worldwide oil and gas industry. He combines hands-on oil
and gas industry experience, information technology expertise, and
industry market knowledge from assignments at well-known companies
including British Petroleum, Price Waterhouse, and most recently Cap
Gemini.

Similarly in the healthcare industry, Jeff Karp has joined Sybase as the
Health Care Industry Solutions director, with more than 17 years of
experience in the health care market, at industry-leading companies
including SMS, Coopers & Lybrand, and Baxter.

These directors are supported by industry-focused resources throughout the
company. More than half of Sybase's worldwide sales force is vertically
aligned. Approximately one-third of Sybase's North American sales and
two-thirds of European sales is devoted to vertical industries. In
addition, a segment of Sybase's professional services organization is
being structured by industry to provide project management services from
business strategy to information technology.

Sybase Partners Deliver Best-of-Breed Solutions

The Sybase Industry Solutions model is designed for those customers looking
for best-of-breed solutions. Sybase has a partner-focused approach to
delivering applications. This approach provides customers with the
flexibility to choose the right solutions for their needs. Single-vendor
solutions are limited by the capabilities of one vendor--it is difficult
to provide best-of-breed in several areas. Sybase's Open Solutions
partners provide a comprehensive selection of both vertical and horizontal
application providers, ISVs, and systems integrators.

In addition to current Open Solutions partners, Sybase is actively
recruiting new, strategic partnerships within the target industries.
Within the health care industry, Sybase has partnered with more than 60 of
the leading health care application providers, such as Oacis Healthcare
Systems, Inc., HBO & Company, and Strategic Marketing Information, Inc.

In a related release today, Sybase recently announced a strategic
partnership with SAIC (Science Applications International Corp.) in the
health care market. The two companies will collaborate to develop an
industry-leading client/server infrastructure supporting commercial health
care information systems that meet the rapidly changing demands of the
health care community. Sybase will also become a partner in SAIC's
existing Center for Health Care Technology used for demonstrating
integrated, large-scale, distributed database solutions which integrate
and leverage today's existing health care information systems.

Similarly in the oil industry, Sybase recently announced a strategic
partnership with SAIC to jointly develop and market the Exploration &
Production (E&P) Datastore, the industry's first comprehensive data
management solution created to address the oil and gas industry's specific
business and technology requirements. E&P Datastore provides a
customizable relational data access and exchange repository that allows
asset teams to access and share diverse exploration and production data
regardless of physical location. This product is the first data access and
exchange repository to comply with the Petrotechnical Open Software
Corporation (POSC) industry standard for the oil and gas market.
