RBC DOMINION SECURITIES STANDARDIZES ON SYBASE IN MOVE TO CLIENT/SERVER

Leading Canadian Brokerage Firm Selects SYBASE to Support Over 1,200 Users
at Distributed Locations

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 11,1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that RBC Dominion Securities (DS), a leading
Toronto-based securities brokerage firm, has standardized on SYBASE
technology for its new, corporate-wide client/server computing system. In
a move from mainframes to an enterprise client/server system, RBC Dominion
Securities, owned by the Royal Bank of Canada which is the largest
Canadian bank, chose SYBASE software as the company's new database
foundation. Sybase's SQL Server, Open Client, Open Server, and Replication
Server) were selected as key components of DS's new enterprise
client/server architecture.

RBC Dominion Securities chose SYBASE software based on the powerful
distributed information processing capabilities of Replication Server, the
SYBASE open and flexible architecture, and the superior quality of
Sybase's customer service and support.

"Putting timely information on our employees' desktops is essential for
DS's competitiveness in the financial investment industry," said Cameron
Murray, vice president and director of systems and telecommunications at
RBC Dominion Securities. "As the leader in client/server database engines
for the financial market, SYBASE provides us with the flexibility,
performance and support needed to quickly and efficiently build our next
generation information system. With SYBASE, our new client/server
environment will empower the 1,200 users from different company locations
to access and utilize critical information required for DS to stay
competitive."

"We are pleased to have been chosen by RBC Dominion Securities as the
corporate standard for its new client/server initiative," said Richard
Yanowitch, vice president of corporate marketing at Sybase. "With Sybase's
powerful Replication Server, RBC Dominion Securities will be able to
provide users at the company's many branches easy access to critical
information in a cost effective and timely manner."

DS's Use of Client/Server Computing to Gain Competitive Edge

RBC Dominion Securities move to a client/server environment is driven by
the company's need to remain competitive by distributing critical
information to employees faster and more effectively. This initiative will
facilitate the delivery of enhanced client information, transaction
history and client portfolio holdings as well as real time marketing and
research information in an integrated fashion. DS's move from a mainframe
system to a client/server environment will enable information to be more
effectively distributed to sales employees throughout the company's 130
branch locations. The original off-site mainframe set-up was costly and
inhibited the company's sales representatives from generating customized
strategic reports and competitive analyses from the stored information.

With the SYBASE architecture, the new client/server system will enable more
employees to access and utilize timely data, such as financial statistics
and demographics, stored at the central headquarters. Since Canada has
high data communication costs, the information distribution approach
provided by Sybase is a cost effective way to deliver data to users
throughout the company.

The new client/server system will function on three levels. First, Sybase's
SQL Server, which will be installed at DS's corporate headquarters on UNIX
workstations, will store all data. Replication Server located at
headquarters, will distribute this data to the company's four regional
offices, which serve as the second level of the computing system. Housed
on UNIX workstations at the regional offices, Replication Server will
enable the real-time distribution of this information to the many company
branches that have SQL Server running Netware. At the third level, more
than 1,200 sales employees at the company branches will access and utilize
the distributed information at their desktop PCs running Windows 3.1.

DS plans to build a specific demographic database using PowerBuilder, a
Windows development tool from Powersoft, a subsidiary of Sybase. This
demographics database will enable DS sales staff to spot demographic
trends and recommend financial products that better reflect customers'
needs in particular regions.

With Sybase's open architecture, DS will be able to move mainframe and
mini-based applications residing on legacy systems to the new servers.
Sybase's Open Client, a client application programming interface (API)
that enables third-party software to access SQL Server and Replication
Server, will provide users the flexibly to use different applications and
tools.
