SYBASE AND SILICON GRAPHICS TEAM UP TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR WORLD WIDE
WEB

Sybase and Silicon Graphics Enable Personalized Marketing on the Web

INTEROP, Las Vegas, NV, March 28, 1995; -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, and Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI), today
announced a strategic initiative to deliver solutions for the World Wide
Web that will combine the benefits of Sybase's high performance
information management systems with powerful media-rich web servers from
Silicon Graphics. The SYBASE SQL Server 10 relational database management
system (RDBMS) will be integrated with Silicon Graphics' WebFORCE
CHALLENGE servers, enabling businesses and consumers to browse information
on the Web as well as perform key information management functions such as
transaction processing and customer profile tracking.

The integration of SYBASE software and Silicon Graphics' WebFORCE CHALLENGE
servers effectively enables data-rich personalized marketing on the World
Wide Web, by allowing Web site providers to create custom home pages that
are tailored to user preferences.

The announcement is part of a larger agreement signed in November, 1994,
under which both companies intend to explore joint business opportunities
in existing and emerging markets. Silicon Graphics is a leading provider
of high-bandwidth visual web servers, while Sybase is a leader in
high-performance database software. Together, the two companies can
provide customers integrated high-performance hardware and software
solutions for the World Wide Web.

Dr. Ross Bott, vice president and general manager of the Advanced Data
Division at Silicon Graphics, commented, "Sybase's database software was
designed from the ground up to take advantage of distributed,
client/server environments. We believe that Sybase is an ideal partner for
providing an integrated database and web server system for use on the
World Wide Web, one of the largest client/server environments to date. And
by combining Sybase's capabilities with our own product line for the Web,
we can now provide vast new capabilities that allow Web site providers to
market to individuals rather than demographics."

"Silicon Graphics has been widely recognized as a major innovator in web
server technology", said Russ Werner, vice president and general manager
of Sybase New Media. "We're very excited to extend our successful
relationship with Silicon Graphics to deliver an integrated database and
web server solution to the market."

The World Wide Web can be called the most widely used client/server
application on the Internet. With more than 10 million users and over
30,000 servers, the World Wide Web provides a tremendous opportunity for
businesses to distribute and receive information and to sell goods and
services over a network.

Sybase and Silicon Graphics at Interop

At the Interop trade show, Sybase and Silicon Graphics will discuss an
integrated database-web server system, that will combine a SYBASE SQL
Server 10 database with Silicon Graphics' WebFORCE CHALLENGE servers,
integrated through a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) for access from the
World Wide Web to a SYBASE database. A CGI application programming
interface (API) is part of a suite of products serving the web community
to be announced later in 1995.

Using the Sybase-Silicon Graphics solution, Web site providers will be able
to develop several Web management capabilities, allowing them to market to
specific user profiles as well as to the general Web audience, and
enabling them to integrate their Web site with a high-performance,
reliable business system. Sybase and Silicon Graphics expect Web site
providers to develop systems in the following key areas:

Inventory Management

Inventory management systems will allow Web site providers to manage
inventories such as catalogs or corporate marketing materials. The
inventory can be dynamically adjusted to respond to the level of interest
in an inventory item.

Customer Tracking & Marketing

Customer tracking systems can store information on customers, including
their purchase history, access to Web pages, etc. In addition, systems can
be developed to analyze Web user interactions or dynamically modify the
Web pages to match user preferences.

Transaction Management

These applications will manage on-line purchases, including storing and
tracking of purchases, storing customer billing and shipping information,
tracking backorders, etc.

Silicon Graphics' WebFORCE Product Line

WebFORCE, unveiled earlier this year, is the first product line for
creating and serving media-rich content for the World Wide Web. This new
solution combines high-bandwidth visual computing systems with intuitive
browsing on powerful Silicon Graphics CHALLENGE servers. Sybase believes
that the WebFORCE CHALLENGE system provides the highest Web server
performance on the market today. The WebFORCE CHALLENGE systems' leading
1.2 GB/second I/O performance and superior system architecture handles
thousands of Web transactions per minute. In addition, Netscape
Communications Corporation's Netsite Communications Server software allows
for high-performance, flexible configurability, scalability, and ease of
use. The WebFORCE CHALLENGE system's bandwidth of up to 1.2 gigabytes per
seconds system bus and ample storage make this dedicated server ideal for
the media-rich content of the Web.

Sybase New Media

The New Media Division is Sybase's recently formed business unit targeted
to develop products and services for new emerging markets such as
interactive television (ITV), on-line services, and the Internet. Sybase
provides its core System 10 products and the SYBASE Intermedia product
family, an end-to-end software architecture for interactive, videocentric
services. The Intermedia architecture consists of Gain Momentum, Gain
Interplay, and the Intermedia Server. Sybase believes that, together,
these products currently provide the most scalable and interoperable
software architecture for interactive multimedia systems on the market
today. In fact, Sybase has been chosen to provide its software by leading
telecommunications and cable television companies in several interactive
television trials. Sybase's SQL Server 10 and the Gain Momentum authoring
environment are available on Silicon Graphics workstations today.
