1. Kmax - An Advanced Multi-Parameter Data Acquisition and Instrument
Control Environment for the Macintosh - SMA-106

Kmax is a complete environment for data acquisition and process control
with advanced features for data management , visualization, and reporting.
Kmax is a self-consistent, fully integrated Macintosh application
inter-operating with system 7.5 and other compatible application
programs.

It supports single- and dual-parameter data displays, provides a variety of
formatting options and allows the user to configure external
instrumentation from windows on the Macintosh. With its ability to import
and export data, a built-in scripting language, and high-level support for
the CAMAC, GPIB, VME and VXI instrumentation, support for event-by-event
data acquisition and on-line and off-line analysis, Kmax is well suited
for scientific and engineering computations and data analysis. The core
environment may be expanded by adding user defined controls, external
commands and external functions, or it may be extended to custom hardware
environments by installing user-defined Module Description Resources
(MDRs). MDRs are simple software descriptions of instrumentation modules
that guide the user step-by-step through sequence setup.

To assist in data analysis, Kmax supports most standard histogram
operations including histogram addition, subtraction scaling, compression,
truncation, concatenation, convolution, etc. Some of the advanced features
include the FFTs, polynomial and guassian fitting routines, regions of
interest and data markers.

Kmax simplifies the control of complex modular instrumentation without
obscuring the fundamental architectural features. Combined with the
Macintosh, Kmax provides an ideal environment for teaching and training.

2. The MacVEE System

Interfaces Macintosh computers with NuBus card directly to CAMAC or VMEbus
racks. Requires Macintosh equipped with a NuBus Interface. MacVEE
interfaces Macintosh computers directly to VME or CAMAC. Up to eight CAMAC
crates or seven VME crates may be linked to a Macintosh computer. The
MacVEE NuBus Card (A 410) is a NuBus-compatible interface designed
according to Apple NuBus specifications, an adaptation by Apple of the
IEEE P1169 standard. The Card supports all Mac data transfers on the Apple
NuBus and automatically performs the required VME or CAMAC operation. The
MacVEE VMEbus Master (V 370) is an A24, D16, 6U VMEbus-compatible module.
It can be used as a system controller or normal DTB VMEbus master in a VME
multiprocessor system. The Mac-CC CAMAC Controller (392) supports multiple
controllers in a CAMAC rack with either R/G (request/grant), arbitration
or ACL (auxiliary controller lockout). It is compatible with LAM graders
and can be intermixed with MacVEE VMEbus master modules on the same bus
from a single NuBus card. The MacVEE system is fully supported in the Kmax
environment.

3. CAMAC Minicrate - SCH-100

Minicrate features includes:

* IEEE-583 compatible back plane
* Eleven slot capacity
* Vertical module mounting
* Integrally shielded enclosure
* Desktop size
* 340 watt switching power supply
* Short circuit and over voltage protection

The SPARROW minicrate provides a cost effective solution for small CAMAC
based instrument configurations. The minicrate incorporates high
performance switching power supplies providing all standard CAMAC
voltages, including the often used + 12 volt power. To guard against
accidental damage to modules, short circuit protection as well as over
voltage shutdown circuitry are incorporated in the design of the power
supply. The minicrate provides two fans for module cooling. In addition,
the thermally isolated power supply compartment has it's own cooling fan.
The enclosure is all aluminum and has a two stage integral RFI line
filter, which reduces its susceptibility to conducted as well as radiated
noise. Due to the side location of the power supply, the case depth is
less than 16 inches.

4. CAMAC Dataway Display and System Monitor - SCM-593

SCM-593 features include:

* Full functionality at low cost
* Separate display for Read and Write cycles
* Comparison of Read and Write Dataway cycles
* Command and Write registers read from CAMAC
* Read back of previous Dataway operation for automated system testing
* Five modes of Dataway monitoring
* Clear push-button
* LAM push-button and input for external LAM triggers
* Panel markings for hex and octal
* Dual purpose LED push buttons

The model 593 is a low-cost, single width diagnostic Dataway module with a
visual display and programmable features.

The module contains two 24-bit registers, designated as Read and Write
registers, and a 20-bit Command register. Dataway signals are stored in
the registers and displayed on the front panel. The registers may also be
read-back onto the Dataway via CAMAC commands.

The are five modes of operations: S1, NS1, QSI, DC, and ID. The operation
mode determines the method used to latch the Dataway signals into the
593's registers. The modes are selected by the front-panel push-buttons or
by the three-bit Control register. The current state of the control
register is displayed on the front panel.

In mode S1, each pattern of Dataway signals is strobed into the module
registers and is displayed irrespective of where the module is placed in
the crate and without the module being addressed. In modes NS1 and QS1,
Dataway signals are latched when the module is addressed or when Q is
asserted. In the DC mode, the front panel displays the current state of
the Dataway. In ID mode, the module responds only to commands addressed to
the slot in which the module resides.

Interrupt routines can be tested using the LAM simulation facility. A LAM
can be produced manually (if enabled by the front panel push-button, by
program control using the F(25) A (0) command, or by a TTL signal on INP
front panel connector. In NSI mode, the strobes are available on the L
connector. The Write, Read, and Command registers can be cleared by
pressing the front-panel CLR push- button.

5. Kmax Data Storage Tape System - DSS-8205

The DSS-8205 consists of an EXABYTE 8205 cartridge tape subsystem, the
Retrospect backup software and the Kmax Resources. The DSS-8205 provides
an ideal solution for customers who need to store large amounts of
event-by-event (list mode) or histogram data. Control of the subsystem may
be interactive or fully automated from within the Kmax environment.
Example Kmax Instrument files are provided to illustrate how to operate
the unit. Retrospect archiving and backup software is included with the
DSS-8205 and enables the tape unit to be used for day- to- day backup
activities.

The EXABYTE 8mm cartridge tape subsystem (EXB- 8205) offers high-speed
functionality and a maximum data compression ratio of 5:1. it can store
from 2,500 megabytes (2.5 gigabytes) up to 12,500 megabytes (12.5
gigabytes). Compression boosts native sustainable transfer rates up to 1.3
megabytes/second.

Other enhancements include: SCSI-2 compatibility, synchronous data
transfer, integrated speed matching buffer, multi-host support, full
disconnect/reconnect arbitration support, variable block packing and LED
indicator for time-to-clean as well as compression.

The Kmax CTU Resources provide full support for the EXB-8205. The CTUR
XCMDs require Kmax version 5.0 and Mac OS version 7.0 or above. Kmax event
files may be stored and retrieved for off-line data sorting. The complete
command set of the 8205 is supported enabling foreign tape format to be
read.
