FirstClass UUCP Gateway 2.0 Released

New Version of SoftArc's UUCP Internet Gateway Features Multi-tasking and
High Performance Mail & News Delivery

MARKHAM, Ontario -- SoftArc Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of
enterprise-wide, cross-platform group communication software, is now
shipping an enhanced version of its popular Macintosh UUCP gateway
software for connecting FirstClass e-mail and groupware systems to the
Internet.

FirstClass UUCP Internet Gateway for Macintosh 2.0 provides Internet mail
and news connectivity for FirstClass sites that have a period modem
dialup, PPP, SLIP or full time Internet feed from a service provider. The
UUCP gateway is an invisible, seamless bridge between FirstClass and the
Internet.

The UUCP gateway translates FirstClass formatted mail into Internet style
mail, contacts the Internet feed host computer (by modem, SLIP or network
connection), negotiates the UUCP protocol with the host, collects any
waiting mail or news, translates incoming mail or news into FirstClass
format and delivers it.

The new UUCP gateway offers simultaneous multi-task processing and can
download messages from a service provider, decompress news packages and
deliver mail at the same time. The new 2.0 version offers significant
mail delivery speed improvements over previous versions. Other
enhancements include:

- Console for display of gateway status
- Support for UUEncoding & decoding of file attachments
- Improved decompression of batched news transfers
- Multi-hop name resolution
- Support for Macintosh Communications ToolBox connections
- Uses same cross-platform modem files as FirstClass Clients
- Takes advantage of extra memory if available

While the FirstClass UUCP Internet Gateway accommodates threading of
messages to and from Internet newsgroups using proprietary thread
resolution, "references header" threading and MIME support are being
investigated for future versions of the UUCP gateway and other Internet
products.

Other standard features of the gateway include:

- Support for UUCP 'g' protocol, t protocol, scripting, multiple
  modems types
- Integrated support for rnews (Usenet news) replication within
  FirstClass conferences
- Automatic UUEncoding/decoding, BinHex or AppleSingle 1 and 2
  encoding formats for enclosures
- Configurable font, color and styles of message body, quotes, and
  headers on received Internet mail
- User defined 8-bit to 7-bit character translation
- Supports for UNIX style signature files
- Optional positioning of Internet header within message
  (top, bottom, attachment, or discard)
- Separate handling of Mac text attachments versus other attachments
- Support for batched incoming news
- Support for compressed incoming news
- Advanced scheduling
- Aliasing of incoming/outgoing addresses and newsgroups/conferences

The FirstClass UUCP Internet Gateway is designed to be run on a dedicated
Macintosh computer, and requires its own dedicated modem line if modem
connections are made to a service provider. The gateway will run on any
computer with a minimum of 4 MB of available RAM, although allocating more
memory will speed processing.

FirstClass UUCP Internet Gateway 2.0 is available for $495 U.S., the same
price as earlier versions, and may be ordered by calling 1-800-364-1923
(716-871-6724). Upgrades may be downloaded for free by registered owners
from the product updates area of SoftArc Online, SoftArc's public
FirstClass system.
