Shiva Announces Aggressive Licensing Program For Its Remote Access Client
Software

Netscape, Microsoft, NetManage, Farallon, Xircom and Stac Among the First
to Add Remote Access to Their Products with ShivaPPP

Burlington, MA, March 21, 1995 --Shiva Corporation today announced an
aggressive program to license its client software, ShivaPPP, to companies
that have made the strategic decision to incorporate single-user remote
connectivity into their products. Companies committed to the technology in
ShivaPPP include industry leaders Netscape Communications Corporation,
Microsoft Corporation, NetManage, Farallon Computing, Xircom, and Stac.
The Business Systems Division of Microsoft is licensing ShivaPPP for its
Mail and Messaging products.

Remote access is growing rapidly, with several trends driving the growth.
According to projections from Infonetics Research, by 1998 there will be
12-14 million telecommuters; more than 300,000 remote offices outfitted
with remote access technology; and 8 million mobile workers. Additionally,
International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that there will be more
than 40 million remote access users by 1997. There are more than one
million users dialing in through Shiva clients and IDC studies show Shiva
commanding the largest market share in remote access.

Identifying this explosive opportunity, many software vendors have
recognized the need to deliver single-user remote access within their DOS
and 16-bit Windows applications. ShivaPPP provides these companies with
high performance, reliable remote access and complete flexibility in the
choice of client environment, networking protocol and server platform.
Importantly, ShivaPPP is the only 16-bit remote access client software
product to offer an implementation of the Microsoft Remote Access API, a
programming interface to let developers transparently integrate seamless
remote access functionality into their applications. And the ShivaPPP
dialer is compatible with the Windows 95 Remote Access client, which was a
product of a joint development effort between Shiva and Microsoft. This
compatibility provides easy migration of applications with ShivaPPP to
Windows 95.

The Point-to-Point protocol (PPP) was defined by the Internet Engineering
Task Force and is rapidly becoming an industry standard, as evidenced by
its deployment in applications and operating systems. Shiva shipped its
first PPP client in 1991, becoming the first remote access company to
provide PPP-compliant software. As a result, ShivaPPP is the product of
many years of testing, enhancing and installing PPP clients at corporate
customers.

"We are seeing a major shift in how companies are conducting business,
propelled by the requirement to provide growing numbers of employees with
quick, easy access to information stored on an organization's computer
systems," said Shiva President and CEO Frank Ingari. "We recognize that a
key hurdle in production-level implementation of remote access for
corporations is deployment of the client software to all the various
laptops and remote desktop computers. Through this licensing program we
will ease that deployment by making our client software an integral part
of other core applications. And, as a result, we expect to make the
ShivaPPP brand name synonymous with remote access."

ShivaPPP is a single-user remote access dialer, and the OEM version of
Shiva's client software, ShivaRemote. Because ShivaPPP is based on the
industry standard Point-to-Point Protocol, it allows remote access to a
variety of third party PPP servers, as well as Shiva's own LanRover and
NetModem product families. When ShivaPPP is connected with a Shiva server,
additional benefits are derived through added functionality residing in
the server. Additionally, more than 100 different modems are supported,
protecting user investment in existing equipment and providing maximum
flexibility for OEMs when evaluating servers and modem options.

"As access to the Internet through applications such as Netscape Navigator
becomes ubiquitous, the demand for remote access to the Internet is
exploding," said Marc Andreessen, Vice President of Technology at
Netscape. "Our work with Shiva combines our expertise in Internet software
for corporations with Shiva's knowledge and expertise in remote access."

"We have seen demand from within our own TCP/IP customer base for a
multiprotocol remote access client that works with our popular Chameleon
TCP/IP for Windows transport and applications suite," said Bob Williams,
NetManage Vice President of Marketing. "Working with Shiva in this area
made a lot of sense. We will use the ShivaPPP API to meet the needs of our
customers -- creating a seamless integrated solution."

"We're excited to be able to incorporate the ShivaPPP universal client into
future versions of our successful Timbuktu Pro product line, so we can
provide a comprehensive remote access solution that integrates remote node
and networked remote control," said Steven M. Bauman, Farallon's Vice
President and General Manager, Software Products.

"Growing numbers of mobile network users are placing more and more demands
on networks and network administrators," said Jim Soriano, Xircom's Vice
President of Product Development. "Mobile users want access to a full
complement of network services, regardless of their location. ShivaPPP and
Xircom's CreditCard Ethernet+Modem provide a simple, powerful solution
uniquely suited to the needs of these users."

"By licensing ShivaPPP, Stac will provide its ReachOut Remote Control
customers an alternate way to work from a remote office, at home or on the
road by dialing in through Shiva's market-leading remote node pipe," said
John Bromhead, Stac's Vice President of Marketing.

Unique Dialer Application Programming Interface

Shiva has made it easy for companies to integrate ShivaPPP into their
applications, providing multiprotocol, multiplatform support, high
performance and security via the ShivaPPP API. Importantly, application
developers can utilize the user interfaces included in their respective
applications to set up modem configurations and connection parameters for
the user. Additionally, Windows 95 will include the same API as provided
with ShivaPPP. This will allow easy and fast migration of DOS or Windows
applications developed with the ShivaPPP API.

Integrated Robust Network Security Features

ShivaPPP includes advanced security features, ensuring the privacy and
integrity of data. Only known, authorized individuals are able to access
the LAN remotely using ShivaPPP. Industry standard protocols Password
Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge Handshake Authentication
Protocol (CHAP) are included, which confirm the authentication of remote
users seeking to connect to the LAN. Both PAP and CHAP are supported by
most PPP servers, extending the flexibility of ShivaPPP.

The ShivaPPP Client with Shiva Servers

Additional security measures are included with ShivaPPP when it is deployed
with a Shiva LanRover or NetModem server. Shiva's Password Authentication
Protocol provides features such as dial-back, NetWare Bindery and TACACS
authentication, and compatibility with third-party security devices such
as Security Dynamics' ACE Server. Dial-back allows the server to be
configured so that it calls back any phone number initiating a connection,
ensuring that only specified phone numbers are granted access. NetWare
Bindery and ACE Server capabilities provide increased network management
flexibility in choosing where the user names and passwords will be
stored.

Also, utilizing ShivaPPP with either a LanRover or NetModem provides
support for ISDN terminal adapters and STAC data compression, Microsoft's
emerging standard in compression that will be included in Windows 95.

Availability

ShivaPPP is available immediately to OEMs and corporate application
developers, bundled with or without TCP/IP and IPX protocol stacks.
Information about licensing options is available directly from Shiva
Corporation.

Founded in 1985, Shiva Corporation (Nasdaq:SHVA) develops and manufactures
multiprotocol, multiplatform client/server remote access products
featuring transparent remote node connectivity to Local Area Networks. The
LanRover and NetModem product lines provide access to Novell NetWare,
TCP/IP, Microsoft LAN Manager, Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT, SNA and
AppleTalk network resources. The Shiva family of standalone and integrated
remote access servers enable telecommuters and mobile professionals to
make dial-in connections to the LAN, LAN-based users to make dial-out
connections from the desktop to the Internet and other on-line services,
and branch offices to make dial-up LAN-to-LAN connections to central sites
over both PC and Macintosh computers. Shiva can be accessed electronically
at either sales @ shiva.com; over the BBSNet at 617/273-0023 (300-28,000
bps - 8,N.1); or through Shiva's World Wide Web home page at
www.shiva.com.
