Crunch corporate data on your PC using Excel 5

April 1, 1995 -- Every Monday morning, John gets a printout of the previous
week's sales and enters the numbers at his PC so he can work with them
using Excel. He doesn't have to do that. His PC is networked to the
corporate Oracle database where the sales figures are kept. But he doesn't
know how to download the data directly.

Because this situation is all too common, Mike Murach & Associates has just
published a book called Excel 5 for Windows: How to Work With Lists, Pivot
Tables, and External Databases. It explains how to use Microsoft Query, a
program that comes with Excel, to download data from any external database
that's supported by an ODBC driver (like an Oracle, Access, or SQL Server
database).

Once the data's in an Excel database (called a "list"), you can analyze it
using Excel's features. For example, you can use filters to display only
the data that meets the criteria you specify and then work just with that.
You can sort or subtotal the data. You can use pivot tables, a new feature
in Excel 5, to summarize the data based on specific fields (you can also
use pivot tables to work with external databases directly, without
downloading the data). So this 64-page book covers these features as well,
giving you screen shots and procedures that show you what to do.

This book sells for $11.95 and is available at selected bookstores or
