IBM Beta Tests New "InfoMarket Search" Internet Service For Publishers --
Link, Search and Retrieve Content Scattered on the Net

San Jose, CA, (Internet World '95, Booth #1439) Apr. 11, 1995 -- IBM today
announced that it will offer a suite of new services to search and link
distant and diverse sources of digital information and multimedia database
content over the Internet. The beta service offering, which will be
available to selected participants in May, is based on advanced search and
retrieval software agents developed for agencies of the United States and
foreign governments. InfoMarket Search will be offered over the IBM Global
Network later this year.

The IBM Global Network is the world's largest data network, with presence
in 700 cities in more than 100 countries. It offers comprehensive data,
voice and video networking services to meet the needs of more than 25,000
customer enterprises. "InfoMarket Search will provide customers with an
incredibly powerful and flexible solution to their content search and
retrieval requirements," said Jeff Crigler, vice president, IBM
InfoMarket, Networked Application Services division. "The service will
enable end-users to enter a single query that will interrogate nearly all
of the common database formats, support numerous search engines and
deliver the content to the predominant end-user platforms. And InfoMarket
Search is easy to modify to meet a customer's special requirements or
systems."

Publishers with content distributed among different platforms or locations
will be able to create one seamless "virtual service" for their customers
over a secure Internet connection. Customers will also be able to install
InfoMarket Search agents on their own databases and information
repositories to enable them to search internal and external sources with
one query.

InfoMarket Search's underlying technology is designed to access widely
distributed heterogeneous information that is source- and
media-independent. Users can make a single, easy-to- pose query that
simultaneously searches all available information sources, returns the
information quickly, and provides relevance- ranked results.

InfoMarket Search provides a common desktop that allows users to enter a
query using either a concept, query-by-example, text pattern, or other
data search method. InfoMarket Search non-intrusively searches all
databases that have been identified on a network, including textual,
structured and multimedia source information, using database servers that
operate on IBM's AIX platform, as well as other UNIX systems from Sun,
Hewlett- Packard, Silicon Graphics, and Digital, over networks using the
TCP/IP protocol.

InfoMarket Search supports Oracle, Sybase, PAT, Topic, BRS, WAIS, and Basis
Plus databases and search engines, and can be easily modified to support
others. InfoMarket Search merges results from database queries and
presents them to users in many of today's standard office computing
environments, including Apple Macintosh- and Windows-based personal
computers, NCSA Mosaic, NeXTstep, common UNIX workstations employing
X/Motif, and web browsers such as the IBM OS/2 WebExplorer.

InfoMarket Search agents for several popular search engines and databases
will be made available over the Internet or directly from IBM. Publishers
will be able to license InfoMarket Search server software.

IBM is a world leader in digital technology and Internet- related products
and services. InfoMarket Search is the latest addition to IBM's robust
portfolio of customer solutions in the field of information management and
distribution over the Internet's World-Wide Web.
