HP Introduces 40-page-per-minute Laser-quality Printer for Medium-volume
Data-center Printing

NEW CUT-SHEET PRINTER OFFERS UP TO 47 PERCENT LOWER COST-OF-OWNERSHIP THAN
COMPETING MIDRANGE PRINTERS; IS IDEAL PRINTING SOLUTION FOR RIGHTSIZING
DATA-CENTER ENVIRONMENTS

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 3, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today unveiled
the HP 5000 Model C40D, a 40-page-per-minute, cut-sheet laser-quality
printer intended for moderate- to large-volume printing applications and
for all-purpose production printing on corporate computer networks.

The Model C40D, a midrange model in the HP 5000 printer family, is a 300
dot-per-inch (dpi), cost-effective printing solution for environments
requiring up to 300,000 pages per month. The new printer uses Printer
Control Language (PCL) Level 5 -- the print language used by HP's
industry-leading LaserJet printers -- and features a high-performance
RISC(1) controller for enhanced formatting and printing capabilities.

At a Glance

  - New 40-page-per-minute medium-duty HP laser-quality printer;
  - 300,000 page-per-month duty cycle;
  - Up to 47 percent lower cost of ownership than Xerox 4235 printers;
  - 170MB internal hard disk for font and data storage; and
  - 56 popular HP LaserJet font cartridges preloaded on hard disk.

"As companies move to rightsize their midrange- and mainframe-based data
centers to open, standards-based servers like the HP 9000, they often want
to rightsize their printing environments as well," said David J. Hoover,
operations manager for HP's Systems Peripherals Operation. "The Model
C40D combines state-of-the-art printer technology, conformance to de facto
industry standards and excellent print performance in a compact,
cost-effective package -- a highly functional alternative to costly
data-center system printers."

Typical midrange printers have duty cycles ranging from 50,000 to 200,000
pages per month. The Model C40D's duty cycle is up to 50 percent higher
than this, providing substantial per-page cost reductions and up to 47
percent lower cost of ownership over a five-year period. In addition, the
Model C40D's large duty cycle allows it to meet the maintenance and
reliability demands of medium- to high-volume printing environments in
which printers are operated continuously for extended periods of time.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE FEATURES

The Model C40D provides several enhancements that make it ideal for mid- to
high-volume printing applications. These include fast print-formatting
capabilities, new easy-to-use features and 100 percent higher maximum
monthly printing capacity than the 35 page-per-minute Xerox 4235 midrange
printer.

The Model C40D features a high-performance, 50MHz MIPS RISC microprocessor
and on-board image decompression to ensure that it can maintain its
40-page-per-minute print speed for a wide variety of applications and data
types. These enhanced formatting capabilities are ideal for electronic
publishing and complex electronic forms.

For expanded font access and storage, faster printer power-up and quicker
error-recovery sequences, the Model C40D also features a standard internal
170MB disk drive. This hard drive comes preloaded with nearly 1,000 fonts
used in popular HP LaserJet printer font cartridges and contains
additional storage for custom and user-installed fonts.

Designed for maximum ease of use in customer environments, the Model C40D's
four-line alphanumeric operator display provides up-to-the-minute printer
status using explicit English-language warning and status messages. In
addition, printer memory is expandable to a maximum 64MB, providing
additional storage capacity for lengthy documents or large graphical
jobs.

ENHANCED PRINTER CONNECTIVITY, MANAGEABILITY

The printer has integrated serial and parallel interfaces for connection to
HP-UX(2)-based HP 9000 and MPE/iX-based HP 3000 environments. In addition,
the Model C40D can be connected to Ethernet and Token Ring PC LAN
environments using the HP JetDirect EX network interface (purchased
separately) and standard HP LaserJet printer drivers for TCP/IP(3), Novell
NetWare or HP LAN Manager.

The HP JetDirect EX interface allows network administrators to use the same
software tools they use to manage LaserJet printers on their networks. In
addition, it facilitates communication of device-management data between
the printer and common network-management software applications. In the
event of a printer problem, these enhanced printer-management capabilities
allow system managers to identify and diagnose errors rapidly -- greatly
increasing the Model C40D's uptime and availability to users.

Like HP's 30-page-per-minute Model C30, the Model C40D is largely
user-maintainable and has among the lowest cost of ownership in its class.
All major printer components (photoconductor, developer, fuser and
cleaning unit) are packaged as cartridges that can be replaced by users.
Unlike desktop laser printers, the Model C40D can be operated continuously
over extended periods of time without risk of damaging the print engine.

In addition, the Model C40D's developer and photoconductor are
self-tracking and tell users when replacement is needed via an
alphanumeric display. This self-tracking greatly simplifies printer
management.

OPTIONAL HIGH-CAPACITY ACCESSORIES

The Model C40D's standard input and output paper capacities are 800 and 550
pages, respectively. Optional high-capacity input and output accessories
increase input capacities to 3,050 sheets and output capacities to 1,400
sheets. The high-capacity output accessory also allows users to separate
printer jobs selectively.

U.S. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The HP 5000 C40D is $30,950. It can be ordered through any HP sales office
or through HP's Direct Marketing Operation, with shipments expected to
begin in May. The Model C40D high-capacity input accessory is $2,350; the
high-capacity output accessory is $1,750.

HP is the second-largest computer supplier in the United States, with
computer revenues in excess of $19.6 billion in its 1994 fiscal year.

Hewlett-Packard Company is a leading global manufacturer of computing,
communications and measurement products and services recognized for
excellence in quality and support. HP has 98,200 employees and had revenue
of $25 billion in its 1994 fiscal year.
