Portable Programming Terminal for Allen-Bradley PLC Controllers

Ruggedized Power Portables Host PLC Controllers and Network Interfaces

Chicago IL, March 14, 1995--Today, Dolch Computer Systems introduced the
L-PAC (Light Portable Addin Computer) model PT (Programming Terminal), a
power portable specifically designed for programming Allen-Bradley PLC
controllers (programmable logic controllers) on the factory floor. Open
ISA slots and optional PCMCIA slots ensure all the expandability required
by programmable logic controller programmers for the add-in functions of
PLC, network, and communication interfaces. The 15-pound LPAC-PT has been
ruggedized to handle factory floor abuse, incorporating a unique hold-down
system that keeps add-in cards firmly in place even during rough
handling.

Programming Allen-Bradley PLC Controllers

The LPAC-PT configured with 8 MB of DRAM and a 540 MB hard drive is the
standard for Allen-Bradley programmable device support products. With two
open ISA slots, it readily accommodates the Allen-Bradley 1784-KT for
connectivity to the Data Highway Plus network, or the soon to be released
1784-KTX and KTXD, allowing connectivity to DH+, DH485 or the PLC-2 or
PLC-3 direct connect. And the LPAC-PT easily meets the software challenges
of running Rockwell International's 6200 or AI series of PLC programming
software as well as the WinTelligent series, Panelbuilder and other
Windows-based applications. Recognizing a continuing demand for mobility,
Allen-Bradley tested the LPAC-PT and verified it to be "interface
compatible" with their 1784 series of programming interface modules. In
fact, McNaughton-McKay Electric Company, Allen-Bradley's largest
distributor, subjected the LPAC-PT to exhaustive testing before
proclaiming it to be the "preferred solution" for factory floor
programming of Allen-Bradley PLC controllers.

Optimized Expansion

The LPAC-PT is a specialized version of Dolch's L-PAC series which was
introduced recently as a specific response to the industry's request for a
lower cost, lightweight platform for applications such as network
analysis, industrial PLC programming, and other industrial type
instrumentation applications that don't require the massive expansion
capability of Dolch's four and five slot PAC models. Sharing all the
performance features of the PAC series, L-PAC weighs just 15 pounds--25%
less--yet has room for two full-length/full-height ISA or EISA bus slots.
And, to take advantage of the of the newest in high-technology plug-in
architecture, the user can add two Type II or one Type III PCMCIA slot(s).
With this option, network capability or a modem can be added without using
one of the main system bus slots.

PAC Power Portables

Since 1987, Dolch has pioneered a whole new concept in portable computers
that differentiates power portables from all others by much higher
performance, larger memory capacity, greater expansion capability, and the
best of flat-panel displays. The company's line of PAC and L-PAC portables
feature Pentium and 486 CPUs, two to seven open slots, and a choice of 16,
32, or 64-bit bus architecture. System memory is available up to 64 MB,
with hard drives to 4 GB. With a three drive bay capacity, the user can
add a built-in CD-ROM, a backup tape drive, or a separate removable hard
drive. PAC offers a selection of monochrome or color displays which
includes choices of the industry's first direct sunlight readable
monochrome TFT, or the industry's most dazzling active matrix color TFT
with a palette of 16.7 million colors.

About Dolch Computer Systems

Dolch Computer Systems manufactures and distributes high performance
portable computers for power-users who require a high level of system
adaptability and expandability. The company's products are marketed
directly to a broad range of corporate industrial users. Founded by Volker
Dolch, a pioneer in the development of microprocessor instrumentation, the
company is privately held and headquartered in Fremont, California, with
subsidiaries in Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Price and Availability

LPAC-PT models with passive matrix color displays begin at about $4500.
Models are available with active matrix color or sunlight readable
monochrome screens. Delivery is currently running stock to 4 weeks.
