Unconstrained Graphics and Video on a Color Flat-Panel

Ruggedized Portables are First to Break 100 WinMarks

Fremont, CA, March 20, 1995--Today, Dolch Computer Systems introduced color
flat-panels displaying 16.7 million simultaneous colors and achieving an
astonishing video performance rating in excess of 115 WinMarks on the
company's line of PAC (Portable Add-in Computers) ruggedized power
portables. Dolch's new digital video technology breaks through all the
previous barriers inherent with flat-panels by creating compatibility with
the wealth of video controllers and overlay boards designed for peak
performance on CRTs. Transparent to the user, the technology allows
integration of the world's fastest PCI and VESA bus video controllers, and
virtually any of the new video compression and overlay boards used in
high-end graphics, video teleconferencing, and multimedia applications.
Dolch PAC power portables meet or surpass all of the performance
characteristics of the industry' s very best desktop systems with CRT
displays.

Video Performance on a Flat-Panel

Dolch Computer Systems, an award winning manufacturer of high-performance
portable computers, was the first company in the world to offer active
matrix color panels on a portable. The company is now the first ever to
break completely free of the constraints previously dictated by the
application specific controllers that have been necessary for flat-panel
displays. By designing a transparent interface that allows the use of
industry standard VGA cards, Dolch has opened up the portable to all of
the video control products for high-end CRTs. The massively expandable PAC
series provides the user with the choice of selecting from the industry's
wide array of ISA, EISA, VESA, and PCI bus based graphics accelerators and
video controllers. For example, the first PAC demonstrators were fitted
with 64-bit PCI controllers with 2 MB of VRAM that achieved a performance
rating of over 115 WinMarks. In addition to the wealth of controllers, any
of the popular JPEG and MPEG compression boards, and specialty CODEC
boards for phone-line and ISDN distribution of video can be used as
plug-and-play components in any of Dolch' s PAC and L-PAC (Light-PAC)
power portables. "The new digital video technology in a Dolch power
portable provides for graphics and video applications never before
possible on any flat-panel portable computer," according to Volker Dolch,
company President.

Nomadic Video Teleconferencing

Fueled by improved technology and falling prices, the video
teleconferencing market has grown to an estimated $660 million this year
and is expected by industry analysts to climb over $10 billion by 1997. It
is easy to foresee a future where video conferencing will become a basic
part of "nomadic computing" for all top level business executives. Mobile
teleconferencing with its requirements for plug-in CODECs and high-speed
ISDN modems will not be accomplished on ordinary laptops or notebooks.
This new business tool absolutely demands the video overlay capability,
the desktop-like performance, and the expandability of a Dolch PAC power
portable.

PAC Power Portables

Since 1987, Dolch has pioneered a whole new concept in portable computers
that differentiates power portables from all others by much higher
performance, larger memory capacity, greater expansion capability, and the
best of flat-panel displays. The company's line of PAC and L-PAC portables
feature Pentium and 486 CPUs, 2 to 7 open slots, and a choice of 16, 32,
or 64-bit bus architecture. System memory is available to 64 MB, and hard
drives are available to 4 GB. With a 3 drive bay capacity, the user can
add a built-in CD-ROM, a backup tape drive, or a separate removable hard
drive. PAC offers a selection of monochrome or color displays which
include choices of the industry's first direct sunlight readable
monochrome TFT, or the industry's most dazzling active matrix with a
palette of 16.7 million colors.
