DIGITAL'S STORAGE BUSINESS UNIT UNVEILS WIDE SCSI STRATEGY FOR STORAGEWORKS
PRODUCT LINE

New Storage Solutions Provide Customers with Additional Interconnect
Choices

MAYNARD, Mass. -- April 3, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced a core strategy for the introduction of wide SCSI storage
technology to its StorageWorks product line. The company is rolling out
new wide SCSI storage products over the next 12 to 18 months as an
increasing number of wide SCSI components become available to provide
clear performance advantages to its customers. As part of this strategy,
Digital today introduced a range of new wide SCSI offerings targeting
specific applications, becoming the first provider of wide SCSI products
for Digital computing platforms.

Digital has based its product roll-out strategy on the fact that wide SCSI
direct-connect solutions offer significant performance benefits in select
high-bandwidth applications. By directly attaching wide SCSI products to
computing systems with high performance busses, such as PCI, users can
achieve gains in performance and throughput efficiency when running
applications with large numbers of large data transfers. Such applications
include host-based RAID 0, seismic, telemetry and imaging.

"In some instances, wide SCSI solutions can provide tremendous performance
gains, particularly when host-based RAID 0 is utilized,"said Robert
Passmore, manager of strategy and technology for Digital's Storage
Business Unit. "Digital is committed to evaluating wide SCSI technologies
as they become available and incorporating them in storage products where
they provide our customers higher performance and cost savings. Our
ultimate goal is to offer maximum choice -- of storage media, interconnect
technologies, and configuration options, while aggressively lowering total
storage cost of ownership."

Today's announcement follows closely the Storage Business Unit's March 7,
1995 introduction of new PCI storage solutions. According to Edward
McCarren, Digital UNIX marketing manager for Digital's Storage Business
Unit, these recent StorageWorks PCI product introductions offer
significant storage system performance and data availability gains for the
large and growing base of Digital's AlphaServer customers.

"Our PCI announcement demonstrated our strengths in leveraging emerging
technologies that deliver significantly faster throughput and higher
availability. Today's announcement extends that capability with wide SCSI
storage subsystems that directly attach to the PCI bus, allowing customers
to take full advantage of available bandwidth for even greater
productivity gains," McCarren said.

New StorageWorks Wide SCSI Solutions

Digital today introduced three StorageWorks wide SCSI products for
Alphaserver 2100 systems running the Digital UNIX operating system. This
announcement complements Digital's recently-available wide SCSI offerings
for HP-UX, Sun, IBM AIX, and Novell NetWare platforms.

The offerings introduced today include:

Wide SCSI Disk Drives -- RZ26L-W and RZ28-W

Based on fast-wide 16-bit SCSI technology, the StorageWorks RZ26L-W (1 GB)
and RZ28-W (2 GB) disk drives for Digital UNIX customers offer high
bandwidth SCSI support of 20 MB per second. Both 3.5-inch devices provide
data access times of 15.1 MS, average seek times of 9.5 MS, and are
backwards compatible to ensure investment protection. Priced at $950 for
the RZ26L-W and $1829 for the RZ28-W, both disk drives come with a 5-year
warranty, including a 1-year on-site warranty.

DWZZB 16-Bit SCSI Bus Extender/Signal Converter

The new StorageWorks DWZZB-VW single-ended to differential SCSI bus
converter handles data rates up to 20 MB per second on fast SCSI, while
allowing maximum extension of the SCSI bus with no performance
degradation. Designed for more powerful 16-bit SCSI buses, the DWZZB
extends the SCSI bus from 3/6 meters to 25 meters, and is fully compatible
with the 2-5 MB per second data rates of earlier SCSI interconnects.
Priced at $600, the DWZZB-VW offers a 1-year on-site and an additional
2-year return-to-factory warranty.

BA356-KC Wide Deskside Expansion Unit

The StorageWorks BA356-KC Wide Deskside Expansion Unit supports the
newly-introduced 16-bit RZ26L-W (1 GB) and RZ28-W (2 GB) disks, and the
DWZZB-VW 16-bit single-ended to differential SCSI bus converter. In
addition, the BA356-KC supports the recently-announced KZPSA
high-performance wide SCSI to PCI adapter and the high- performance
StorageWorks 7200 RPM disk drives. The BA356-KC is priced at $1,200 and
includes a shelf, power supply, pedestal kit and power cord. Digital
offers an accompanying 1-year on-site and an additional 2-year
return-to-factory warranty.
