DATA GENERAL INTRODUCES IMAGING FOR PICK DATABASES

WESTBORO, Mass., April 17, 1995 -- Data General Corporation today announced
AV Image/ARS (Archival and Retrieval System), a new software solution that
for the first time brings award-winning AV Image capabilities to VARs and
customers using Pick:Open Database, uniVerse, UniData and PI/open
multi-dimensional databases.

The AV Image/ARS high-performance document imaging system is designed to
address a wide range of paper-intensive business and office applications.
Offering high-end imaging functionality at affordable prices, AV Image/ARS
lets enterprises and departments of all sizes handle data, text and images
in a fully integrated manner. It combines the benefits of online data
retrieval, optical storage and scanning within a single environment. The
system is modular, allowing organizations to expand the system as needs
require.

An open solution that works within existing multi-dimensional database
environments, the new software features a special interface between AV
Image and Pick :Open Database, uniVerse, UniData and PI/open databases.
The interface opens the AV Image viewer, which allows the user to
manipulate images from the database.

The new AV Image/ARS software also provides capabilities to image-enable
existing applications.

"We found that users wanted their images stored on existing databases and
storage devices, and they wanted to quickly access and view those images
on systems and equipment they already own," says Dan Sapir, director of
the Data General Multidimensional RDBMS Business Unit. "The new AV
Image/ARS combines the strengths of the multidimensional database with the
award-winning AV Image product, offering users a fully integrated solution
tailored to the needs of their environments."

In addition to the benefits of linking with multidimensional databases, the
AV Image/ARS architecture allows users to view images and documents on
standard PCs over regular dial-up communications lines. The efficient
client/server approach of AV Image is to perform nearly all of the
preprocessing (overview scaling and mini-page creation) on the AViiON
UNIX-based server, eliminating the PC memory or transmission bandwidth
contention problems associated with other imaging systems.

The AV Image/ARS solution comprises three main sections:

AV Image/ARS Server Software contains a comprehensive set of Application
Program Interfaces (APIs) that allow developers to image-enable existing
applications. The server software also contains the links to one of the
four multi-dimensional databases; the queuing software for handling
optical storage requests, and the automatic overview and mini-page
creation software.

AV Image/ARS Scan Client is a Windows-based product containing all the
software needed for image scanning. It manages scanning, image
distribution, automatic compression and decompression and image output.
Single and multiple documents can be scanned and attached to the database
at a later date.

AV Image/ARS View Client includes the document image viewing and annotation
software, and it allows multiple images to be linked to a single record.

AV Image has won four major industry awards since its introduction in 1993.
It has just been named 1994 Product of the Year by Imaging Magazine, for
the second consecutive year. Strongly committed to the unique needs of
RDBMS users, Data General offers a wide range of RDBMS products and
services to help customers migrate legacy applications and deploy
solutions using Data General AViiON servers and CLARiiON advanced storage
subsystems.

Data General is an open systems company that specializes in providing
enterprise servers, storage systems and services to information technology
users worldwide. The company, which is headquartered in Westboro, Mass.,
reported revenues of $1.12 billion in fiscal 1994.
