DATA GENERAL ANNOUNCES AV COLD SOFTWARE WITH HIGH-VOLUME FEATURES AT
AFFORDABLE PRICES

SAN FRANCISCO, April 11, 1995 -- At AIIM '95 today, the Imaging Business
Unit of Data General Corporation continued its Spring series of new
product announcements with the introduction of AV cold software. AV cold
is a new Windows-based SQL client/server solution for capturing, managing
and visually presenting formatted computer output such as voluminous
periodic reports used in a variety of data-intensive enterprise
environments.

The new Data General software offers key advantages over traditional COLD
(Computer Output to On Line Data) solutions. It is a fully featured high-
volume COLD solution based on industry standards. AV cold can use a wide
range of storage subsystems, including disk arrays and optical disk
media.

"AV cold's comprehensive use of standards-based computer output capture
capabilities can provide today's enterprise user with a powerful
productivity weapon. It is especially useful in service-oriented
applications, where documents, records and correspondence need to be
accessed immediately," says William Zastrow, vice president of the Data
General Imaging Business Unit.

"Consistent with our overall approach to the imaging marketplace, AV cold
can be incorporated into existing computing and database environments,
offering a full range of advanced features at affordable prices."

AV cold captures computer-generated report output data directly from
mainframes or minicomputers. It can also accept scanned-in paper documents
as bit-mapped images. Captured data and images are compressed, indexed and
stored on a range of storage subsystems, including disk arrays, optical
jukeboxes or combinations of these subsystems with hierarchical storage
management software. Available for immediate retrieval, data and
information can viewed or FAXed in true context using graphical form
overlays, and can be transferred in revisable form to other applications
such as spreadsheets and databases.

With COLD, hardcopy computer output is eliminated, freeing users from the
need to deal with cumbersome, inefficient and expensive paper printouts.
COLD also offers advantages over microfilm output, which suffers from
limited indexing capability, lack of integrity (lost files) and cannot be
widely accessed unless microfilm copies are stored at all user locations.

AV cold helps enterprises optimize the efficiency of any service- oriented
business function, particularly in hospitals, government agencies, banks,
insurance companies, as well as manufacturing and distribution
environments.

One familiar example is the hospital records department. With AV cold,
department users can instantly access relevant information from
traditional "green bar" reports on a PC monitor screen, using an itemized
billing overlay form. At the same time, the user can access patient or
insurance company correspondence as images, and view the two types of
information side-by-side on the same screen. This allows hospital
representatives to address patient questions efficiently and quickly
during a single telephone conversation.

AV cold offers the following specific features:

- Fast capture/index/compression; up to 150,000 pages per hour
- Ability to store millions of compressed pages online
- Industry standard Sybase database supported today, with Oracle and
  Informix support to follow
- Runs with UNIX and PC Windows NT servers
- On-line print and FAX with user-defined graphical form overlays
- Wide range of search capabilities, including field, Boolean, text
search, query by example, direct SQL and file system browsing
- Graphical, hierarchical filing metaphor with unlimited indexing by
cabinet, drawer, folder, document and page
- Auto-indexing via user-defined templates
- Integrated imaging capability that significantly broadens the types
of documents that can be managed
- Comprehensive multiple level security, systems administration and
  database management capabilities
- Wide range of supported storage devices, including CLARiiON disk
arrays, OpStar optical jukeboxes and HSM combinations
- Industry-leading value
- Pricing and Availability

AV cold pricing starts at $1195 per user for the minimum five-user
configuration, including Sybase database and network software. Per-user
prices decrease with increasing user counts. Customers who already have
Sybase would pay less. AV cold software for 100 users, for instance, is
$495 per user with customer-supplied Sybase.

The new software is available in the current quarter.

Data General and its Imaging Business Unit provide enterprise users with a
total COLD solution, incorporating AV cold software, OpStar optical
storage hardware and software, CLARiiON high performance disk arrays, a
wide range of AViiON servers, PCs, network connections and database
software. Through the Data General Systems Integration Business Unit, a
full range of consulting and implementation services are available to
assist customers with COLD solutions.

The Imaging Business Unit is part of Data General Corporation. It leverages
Data General expertise in the deployment and integration of high
performance databases, servers and storage subsystems to address customer
needs in imaging and related markets, estimated to be in the $7 billion
range.
