COMPAQ ANNOUNCES JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH MITAC INTERNATIONAL --
ALLIANCE UNDERSCORES GROWING DEMAND IN CONSUMER PC MARKET

HOUSTON, April 12, 1995 -- Continuing its commitment to the rapidly growing
global consumer marketplace, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today
announced a joint development agreement with MITAC International
Corporation of Taipei, Taiwan, to develop and manufacture a select number
of desktop computers for the consumer market. Products resulting from the
alliance are slated for introduction in the second half of 1995.

"MITAC is a leading supplier of PCs in Taiwan and brings a strong
reputation for quality and a high level of experience in developing
innovative new technologies for the consumer market worldwide," said John
T. Rose, senior vice president and general manager, Compaq Desktop PC
Division. "Our agreement will allow us to extend our capabilities and
broaden our consumer product line, offering our customers an even greater
selection of products during the second half of the year, the peak retail
buying season."

The new agreement will augment and extend Compaq's already strong
engineering capabilities by blending the product development teams from
the two companies. Compaq will manage all design, engineering,
manufacturing and test procedures with MITAC to ensure the continued
quality and reliability that customers expect from the Company. The new
desktops will be manufactured at MITAC's factories worldwide.

All products will carry the Compaq brand and will continue to carry the
Compaq three-year warranty.

"We are pleased to be working with Compaq to provide products for their
customers around the world," said Francis T. Tsai, President of MITAC. "We
recognize Compaq's global reputation for quality, and, like Compaq, we
have been awarded ISO 9001 certification. We are committed to delivering
superb new products to Compaq's customers."

The signing of the joint development agreement is consistent with Compaq's
goal to pursue strategic alliances that enable the company to meet market
demand, while maintaining its reputation for delivering high quality and
useful innovation in its products. Compaq announced last month a joint
manufacturing agreement with Inventec of Taiwan to manufacture notebook
products which are planned for introduction during the second half of
1995. The company also worked for five years with Citizen of Japan to
develop and manufacture the award-winning Compaq LTE Lite notebook PCs.

Compaq will continue to manufacture its award-winning Presario consumer
desktop PCs in its factories in Houston, Texas; Erskine, Scotland;
Singapore; Shenzhen, China; and Jaguariuna, Brazil.
