Debugging Tools Lets Users View API Calls

Developing applications for Microsoft Windows often is a tedious operation
when traditional source-level debuggers are used. For a better view of a
program's operation, developers are better served by viewing the run-time
behavior through the observation of applications-program-interface calls.
Developed by Berkeley Toolworks, Berkeley, Calif., API Vision for Windows
3.1 lets software developers observe any program's calls to the Windows
API. Everything passed to the API is displayed, so developers can quickly
determine how a program behaves in the Windows environment. Such a tool is
needed because the run-time behavior of a Windows program is governed as
much by its API calls as by it procedural logic.

Over 2,000 API calls from any Windows module, including those inside
Windows itself, can be observed unobtrusively. For each intercepted API
call, the API Vision software displays its parameters, along with context
information such as where the call occurred, timings, and other data.
Wherever possible, the software decodes numeric values back to the names
in the SDK help and header files, thus displaying meaningful information
instead of raw data. In addition, multiple instances of API Vision can run
simultaneously to segregate API intercepts from different programs.
Multiple instances also make it possible to spy on two different drivers
from the same category at one time (two printers or MCI drivers, for
example).
