Apple to Incorporate Open Music System Software Technology into QuickTime

Multimedia and Music Standards to Harmonize

CUPERTINO, California--March 27, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. and Opcode
Systems, Inc. today announced an agreement to incorporate support for
Opcode's Open Music System (OMIS) into QuickTime), Apple's software that
brings multimedia capabilities to personal computers and consumer
electronic devices. By integrating support for Opcode's industry standard,
MIDI-enabling software into QuickTime, Apple increases the power and
flexibility of the QuickTime music architecture and reaffirms the role of
the Macintosh computer in the music industry. Together, OMS and QuickTime
simplify the creative process for multimedia developers and music
composers by intuitively routing QuickTime-created music tracks to
external MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) devices such as
keyboards, synthesizers, effects processors and drum machines.

OMS software allows composers to communicate musical information between
the computer and MIDI instruments. QuickTime and OMS working together will
significantly benefit professional musicians, multimedia developers and
music enthusiasts who use the Macintosh to create digital music on
multiple MIDI devices. They will be able to create music using multiple
MIDI instruments, integrate the sound tracks into a QuickTime environment
where they will be synchronized with other media, and deliver a final
consumer product that faithfully recreates the original.

"OMS has become a standard in the music and computer industry for the
Macintosh platform," said Chris Halaby, president of Opcode. "Apple's
endorsement of OMS and commitment to making QuickTime fully OMS-compatible
are significant breakthroughs for the music and multimedia industries."

"QuickTime support of OMS moves the Macintosh up a critical step in its
integration into the professional music studio," said Tom Ryan, manager of
media products, Apple Computer. "Many multimedia developers in such
traditional realms as film scoring and TV production are now incorporating
computer multimedia tools into their creative process. The QuickTime
architecture coupled with OMS are the keys to bridging these two different
worlds."

Both products represent industry standards--Apple's QuickTime for
multimedia title development; Opcode's OMS for computer-aided composition
in the music industry. OMS acts as a central MIDI driver to communicate
with MIDI hardware via a standard serial port connection, and provides
professional quality timing services for synchronizing events. These OMS
timing services were developed by Steinberg, a leading German music
software developer, in conjunction with Opcode. OMS is currently supported
by more than 100 developers, including: Steinberg, Gmbh.; Digidesign,
Inc.; Passport Designs, Inc.; Roland Corporation; Lexicon, Inc.; Mackie,
Inc.; Emagic, Gmbh. and PG Music, Inc.

QuickTime is Apple's software architecture that takes media-rich content
beyond the Macintosh. QuickTime is an enabling technology that supports
the integration of media such as sound, video and animation in a
consistent, seamless fashion to personal computers. It is the only
architecture that can truly deliver multimedia content across multiple
platforms.

Full OMS compatibility is expected to be incorporated into QuickTime by end
of calendar 1995. QuickTime is available to developers through APDA,
Apple's source for developer tools, for $199 in the U.S. Call
1-800-282-2732 (U.S.).

Founded in 1985, Opcode is a leading supplier of computer software and
