Apple Unveils ColorSync 2.0

State-of-the-Art Color Matching for Macintosh

BOSTON, Massachusetts--March 28, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
the availability of ColorSync 2.0, its updated color management
architecture for Apple Macintosh personal computers. ColorSync 2.0 is
operating system-level technology which allows Macintosh users to get more
predictable and accurate color from their applications, scanners, digital
cameras, displays, and printers.

This second generation of ColorSync has been supercharged with a Color
Matching Method (CMM) from Linotype-Hell of Hauppage, New York, one of the
world's leading manufacturers of prepress hardware and software.
Linotype-Hells' CMM is based on the LinoColor 3 color transformation
engine.

"With the advent of low-cost color peripherals, color has become available
to a much large audience," said Terry Bailey, senior director of Apple
printer products. "Whether a customer is producing plain-paper office
documents or glossy, high-quality magazines and books, ColorSync 2.0 makes
working with color easy, fast and consistent."

Apple developed ColorSync originally to provide an industry-standard method
of interpreting and synchronizing the capabilities of color devices, such
as displays, scanners, and printers, so that users get consistent results
when using devices that do not share the same color range. With the
introduction of ColorSync 2.0, Apple offers expanded capabilities,
increased performance and significant third-party support.

ColorSync 2.0 solves many of the challenges of working with color that
computer users have been wrestling with for years. Apple believes that a
broad-based, cross-platform solution will spur the easy and routine use of
color and will help people communicate better and be more productive in
the work they do. ColorSync 2.0 opens a gateway, not just for users, but
for developers who are building on the ColorSync foundation to create new
products and capabilities not available today.

Although ColorSync is designed as an automatic, plug-and-play color
management solution for any Macintosh user, Apple has built in high-level
functionality that will satisfy commercial publishers as well. Third-party
developers, including Agfa-Gevaert, Eastman Kodak Company, Light Source
Computer Images, Inc., Linotype-Hell Company, Quark, Inc. and Radius,
Inc., are announcing ColorSync 2.0-compatible tools and products today
that address the more sophisticated needs of the high-end market.

Many other companies, such as Canon, Inc., Coleridge, Pantone, Inc.,
PixelCraft, Inc. and Tektronix are also announcing their commitment to the
ColorSync 2.0 architecture and their intent to bring products to market
soon.

ColorSync 2.0 is offered as an extension to the Macintosh operating system
and is available today free of charge via Applelink and eWorld. Apple
plans to make it available via other major on-line services by May 1,
1995. Apple and supporting third-party developers plan to ship ColorSync
2.0- savvy products by June 1, 1995.
