Apple Announces the QuickTime Music Toolkit, Commits to Providing Tools to
Help Build the Interactive Music Industry

CUPERTINO, California--March 27, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc., today
announced new interactive music tools for developing titles such as
enhanced audio CDs, on-line virtual concerts and music videos Enhanced CDs
combine traditional audio tracks with interactive content such as
animation, graphics, text and video and can be played back in both CD and
CD-ROM players.

The new tools were previewed at Apple today during an event for the music
industry, and include the QuickTime Music Toolkit and new multi-session
driver software. The Toolkit is an easy-to-use development tool that
allows artists to take existing media elements such as Lyrics, interviews,
liner notes, photographs and videos and combine them to create QuickTime
movies that can be played on both Apple Macintosh and Microsoft
Windows-based computers. Apple today also announced multi-session driver
software that allows multi-session audio CDs, such as CD Plus discs, to be
mounted in multi-session-compatible CD-ROM drives.

The new software shown today will be available exclusively as part of the
new music track from the Apple Multimedia Program, called the Interactive
Music Track, at no additional charge above the annual membership fee,
which is US$300 per year. (Editor's note: See news release on the

"Sony Music Entertainment has outlined plans to use Apple's QuickTime
multimedia software and its development tools when they become available
to create enhanced CDs and other interactive music products," said Fred
Ehrlich, senior vice president and general manager, new technology and
business development for Sony Music Entertainment. "We believe that
Apple's excellent track record of support for cross-platform titles will
be invaluable as we move forward in this area."

REV Entertainment, a New York-based interactive music developer, has
announced support for Apple's cross-platform technology in its enhanced CD
titles. Said Todd Fearn, REV Entertainment CEO, "Apple has a robust
cross-platform multimedia architecture. All of REV's titles will be
cross-platform and Apple's technology helps to make that possible."

The QuickTime Music Toolkit includes the development tools and run-time
software required to create, test and play enhanced audio CDs! including
multi-session CDs. A license to use these tools and redistribute the
run-time software is included in the cost of the Interactive Music Track
membership. The run-time software is expected to be available for both
Macintosh and Windows-based computers. A beta version of the QuickTime
Music Toolkit is expected to be available to members of the Apple
Multimedia Program Interactive Music Track in Spring, 1995. Shipping
versions are expected to be available in mid-1995.

Apple today also announced multi-session driver software that allows
multi-session audio CDs, such as CD Plus discs, to be mounted in
multi-session-compatible CD-ROM drives. CD Plus, using 'stamped
multi-session technology,' is an enhanced CD format that is being
developed by Sony Phillips and endorsed by the Recording Industry
Association of America. The new multi-session driver software is expected
to be bundled with all new Macintosh computers before year-end 1995.
