NEC INTRODUCES VERSA M SERIES OF POWERFUL, MODULAR, MULTIMEDIA-CAPABLE
NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS

Top-of-the-Line System Features Breakthrough Color Displays and Enhanced
Modular Design

San Jose, Calif, September 15, 1994--Introducing several industry
breakthroughs in color LCD technology and a new standard in modularity,
NEC Technologies, Inc. (NECT) today announced the Versa M Series, the
newest member of its innovative family of notebook computers. The Versa M
Series combines brilliant graphics performance, a high-speed engine,
exceptional upgradeability and the versatility to support the power user
for even the most demanding multimedia applications.

With the introduction of the Versa M Series, NECT sets two new innovative
standards, both industry firsts, for color capability in a notebook
computer: VersaVision True Color for a brilliant 16 million color display
and VersaVision High-Resolution Color for a high-precision 800 x 600
display capable of bringing out the finest detail. The Versa M's brilliant
9.5" color TFT and DSTN displays are user-removable and reversible, making
the Versa M a genuinely portable presentation powerhouse. NECT has also
crafted a compact microphone and a high-fidelity speaker into the Versa
M's ergonomic design, providing high-quality audio.

The Versa M's VersaBay extends the modular design concept pioneered in the
original Versa to support the widest range of uses. With the VersaBay, the
user can easily replace the system's floppy drive with a variety of
modules called "Paks." VersaBay Paks include expansion potential for a
second battery, extra PCMCIA cards, and even video capabilities for
watching a favorite TV show on the Versa M.

Behind the Versa M's pretty face and pleasing voice is a powerful engine
capable of devouring today's demanding tasks. The Versa M includes a
robust Intel DX4 75 MHz or 100 MHz processor, 8MB user-upgradeable RAM and
up to a 810MB hard disk drive.

"With the Versa M Series, NECT has created a new class of high-performance,
versatile notebooks for the power user," said Agnes Imregh, NECT's vice
president of computer marketing. "No other notebook available today can
match the Versa M's impressive VersaVision color display technology,
multimedia capabilities and expandability."

The Versa Family

With the introduction of the high-performance Versa M Series, NECT rounds
out its Versa family of innovative notebook products. The Versa S Series,
introduced in June, was the first to offer a "no compromise" solution for
the business traveler -- full notebook functionality at a low travel
weight. The Versa V Series, which began shipping in July, provides high
performance, upgradeability and a comprehensive docking solution for
price-sensitive corporate and SOHO users.

VersaVision: Picture Perfect Displays Set New Standards

The leader in display technology, NECT established two new standards of
color displays with the Versa M Series of notebook computers: VersaVision
True Color and VersaVision High-Resolution Color. VersaVision True Color
brings dazzling desktop display capability on the road. The 9.5"
active-matrix TFT panel displays 16 million colors at 640 x 480 for an
exceptionally brilliant picture. Corporate presenters, interactive
training specialists or those involved in animation and video production
will have their work vibrantly portrayed with the 24-bit True Color
screen.

VersaVision High-Resolution Color models smash today's laptop resolution
standards. The high-precision display resolution of 800 x 600 x 256 colors
enables approximately 50 percent more of the image to fit on the LCD,
providing a sharper picture. This screen, for example, is particularly
suited for financial analysts or professionals involved in computer aided
design, for whom seeing more information on a single screen or viewing
intricate details are just as important as the big picture they
represent.

The Versa M is also available with VersaVision TFT Full Color and
VersaVision Enhanced DSTN Full Color displays. The VersaVision TFT Full
Color model, which offers 65,536 vibrant colors at 640 x 480 dots per
inch, is targeted at road warriors who are looking for that extra edge.
With a reversible 9.5" TFT screen, this model is perfect for keeping
audiences captivated with the colors they are accustomed to in their
offices. VersaVision Enhanced DSTN Full Color models offer quick cursor
response and 65,536 colors at 640 x 480 at an attractive price.

All Versa M displays are user-removable and reversible so the screen can
face the audience instead of the presenter. All models also have a new,
third generation, high-performance local bus video design, providing two
to three times the Windows graphics performance of competitive systems.
Simultaneous display of external video and the LCD is possible for all
Versa M models.

Portable Power To Go And Grow

With its powerful IntelDX4 75MHz or 100MHz processors with integrated math
coprocessor and 16KB of cache (128KB extra external cache in 100MHz
systems), the Versa M Series offers the ultimate in power and
flexibility.

As the inventor of the modular notebook computer, NECT takes expandability
to a new level with the Versa M through the VersaBay, Versa Bay Paks, and
other upgradeable features. The VersaBay slot comes standard with a 1.44MB
user-removable floppy drive. It also accepts optional VersaBay Paks,
including Video Pak, Smart Battery Pak and PCMCIA Paks. The Smart Battery
Pak enables the use of DoubleTime technology, while the PCMCIA Pak
complements the Versa M's two internal PCMCIA slots.

The Video Pak was designed to give users the ability to include TV and
video clips in their presentations without the use of a television
monitor. It enables the Versa M to receive television broadcasts or act as
a monitor for a VCR to view corporate videos, training tapes or the latest
Hollywood releases. Video frames or television sequences can also be
grabbed and stored on the hard drive for use in multimedia presentations.
Additional Paks offered by third-party developers in the future are
expected to complement those already available through NECT.

For customers with special application requirements, VersaVision TFT Full
Color models easily convert to a TouchPen computing tablet. Customers
involved with order processing, delivery services, insurance adjustments,
accounting, auditing and warehouse inventory management will find TouchPen
computing reduces the paper trail created by data collection. With the
stroke of a pen or the touch of a finger, forms can be filled out,
signatures captured and paperwork streamlined.

The Versa M Series' unparalleled flexibility allows the user to expand the
system by simply adding new components. Just like its predecessor, the
Versa E Series, the Versa M features user-upgradeable memory cards, hard
disk drives and displays. For enhanced communications, a VersaPage
Messaging Card, VersaConnect Cellular Communications Kit or 14.4Kbps
data/fax modem can also be added to make the Versa M the perfect traveling
companion.

Expanded systems operation is possible through SCSI and network options. A
full complement of ports is available for attaching an external monitor,
printer, keyboard, mouse and audio input/output jacks. The Versa M becomes
a desktop computer when plugged into the new Docking Station II. The
Docking Station II features two full-sized ISA slots and three drive bays
which add the final touches to the Versa M Series versatility. To uphold
NECT's commitment to future standards, the Docking Station II is Plug and
Play ready for the next generation of Windows software.

Multimedia Fun

In addition to its high-quality displays and ability to grab and display TV
and video frames with the VersaBay Video Pak, the Versa M supports 16-bit
audio with a built-in high-fidelity speaker and microphone. The unit
features audio input and output jacks and comes bundled with Windows Sound
System and Run-Time Video for Windows software. You can watch, listen and
talk to the Versa M.

Storage for the Long Haul

The Versa M Series offers the choice of 250MB, 340MB, 540MB or 810MB hard
disk drives to meet the diverse needs of the mobile computer user, and all
models are user-upgradeable to 810MB. A 1.44MB floppy drive comes
standard. The Versa M offers 8MB of high-speed RAM standard and can be
upgraded by the user to 12MB, 16MB, 20MB, 24MB or 40MB as the needs of the
user evolve.

Looks Good, Feels Good

The sleek design of the Versa M houses a full-size, 83-key tactile keyboard
with 12 function keys and full travel, 3mm stroke. A nimble, front-mounted
16mm VersaTrack trackball is textured for smooth tracking and designed to
work with the hand, not against it. Two programmable mouse buttons are
located on either side of the trackball for easy clicking manipulation.

Run Time

For maximum battery power run time, a second NiMH Smart Battery Pak can be
inserted into the VersaBay slot by removing the 1.44MB floppy drive. With
NEC DoubleTime technology, depending on configuration, usage and addition
of the second battery, the Versa M can run up to 10 hours without
recharging. Recharge time for the Versa M is quick -- 1.6 hours with power
off and 2.7 hours with power on. Four levels of power management -- high,
low, custom and off-- control inactivity time-outs for predetermined
system components. In addition. NECT provides a battery gauge to indicate
in one percent increments how much battery time is left.

Warranty, Availability and Pricing

The unique UltraCare service plan is available on the Versa M in addition
to the standard, return-to-factory, three-year limited warranty on all
parts and labor. By completing and submitting on-line Product
Registration, the customer receives one free year of UltraCare service.
UltraCare service includes a toll-free hardware support hot line number
available 24 hours, 7 days a week to request repair service; free
overnight courier pick-up and return of the system anywhere in the United
States or Canada; repair of the system within one business day after
arrival at the service depot and on-site warranty service for specified
Versa docking options. Two additional years of UltraCare service can be
purchased for $99 ($ 132 Canada). UltraCare also includes an international
service program available in 26 countries.

Versa M Series notebook computers are available beginning this month in the
United States and Canada through NECT's network of authorized dealers.
